basic usage as test SMTP server

Hi,
 
I'm looking at using James as a test SMTP server in a localhost-only
configuration.  I've added a user, but when I use the interactive
console to send a message to the test user, it doesn't end up in the
inbox; it looks like the message is stuck in the "outgoing" file store.
I used the quickstart directions on the Wiki to test it out
(http://wiki.apache.org/james/JamesQuickstart).
 
If anyone can help me figure out what's wrong, I'd greatly appreciate
it.
