current books / resources for customization

I'm trying to add a new DB column to a table, render it on the screen, and make it searchable. 

I was looking at the Apache OFBiz Beginner's Tutorial (Howell and Wong) but immediately noticed that a lot of the file locations and file names in the exercises are out of date when using it against 17.12. I managed to get about halfway though the chapter 2 exercises, using my best guess as to which files to edit but am concerned that the code examples may be not compatible or even work correctly in the current OFBiz version.

Question: is this book still a good resource to learn from? Are there other books / references out there that are more up to date?

This said, yes this book is still a good resource to learn from, at least it's the most complete for a beginner. Even with misplaced file, using their 
names you should be able to continue your journey.

Unfortunately there are no other books/references more up to date.
