Alpha release

Ok, I think most of what we need to do has been done. I have a few patches
to apply, and there are a few things remaining, but are people comfortable
making an alpha release? I'll take care of creating the release, tagging
it, updating the site, etc...

So, vote on a 2.0a release?

I haven't yet had a chance to test the latest mods, but I will do this
weekend. Are there any outstanding issues that need to be addressed?

True - but moving it back to proposals and then back to main would
complicate cvs even more.

Basically, I'm hoping to have more time to look at the IMAP stuff.
Especially as we now have more people involved with james in general.
So, I'd prefer to leave it where it is.

Both use the database to store header and delivery information. db:// will
store the message body in the db too, while dbfile:// will only store the
header in that field and use the file system to store the message body.
(right now, the class is deciding whether to store the message in the db
based on whether it's being used as a spool or regular mail repository).

I don't have a strong opinion on this, and this is assuming that the IMAP
code is non-functional, but including the IMAP code means:
- it appears in the configuration, potentially confusing new users
- binds to port 143, which will unlikely create a conflict, but adds to the
confusion
- and then from the confusion we have to answer questions like how many
concurrent sessions can the IMAP code handle.
- also normally we don't add proposals to the main branch until they're more
developed.

Hope this is grist to your mill Charles ..

I've been using latest CVS, I updated all on Sunday, with Mysql for
DefaultUsers, ListUsers, SPOOL and MAIL.

I've found one bug while testing and hacking the bounce email
formats; It sometimes goes into a loop saying that it can't cretate a
connection.
I sent a snip from the log to the list, appended again at the bottom.
I think it has to do with bounced (notify sender or notify recipient,
not o.a.james.james.bounce()) mails looping into the spool or error
repository, and the number of connections needed growing out of
control, but I'm not sure .. not at all.

and I've altered my build.xml which was mildly confused ..
.. mysql-2.0.4.jar is put in the wrong place by build, and
sqlResources isn't added to distro by build, I've appended a diff
which, when combined with the changes outlined below:

The lines in jakarta-james\src\conf\james-config.xml which read
	"<sqlFile>/dist/conf/sqlResources.xml</sqlFile>"
	are changed to ..
	"<sqlFile>../conf/sqlResources.xml</sqlFile>"

will result in db connections being made (using MySQL) without
additional alterations to the distro or config when the distro is
deployed away from the build environment.
I'm actually using build under windows to deploy onto a mapped drive
on a linux box, these changes make it work "out of the box"

OK, I have current CVS (James 2.0a1-dev) working with SMTP & POP3 & file
storage.
So, I am +1 for alpha release.
If people who use the db user or mail storage can check they work OK,
that would be great.

Patches remaining:
- a JDBC dir context (although I seem to have misplaced it... should be in
my email somewhere)
- date timezone patch
- hmm... few other small things.

I think I've applied everything else. Here's my list of things I'm going to
be doing shortly:
- changelog
- remove town stuff
- change jdbc repository to recognize db:// and dbfile://
- probably move imap code to proposal dir

Also need user docs, make sure we're upgraded to and working with Avalon 4.0
(I haven't tested this), and maybe integrate regex matchers and resolve
MySQL key issues. Anyway, once I get the rest of the patches going and the
changelog written, I'll create/update the file of what's remaining, what's
on the horizon, etc...

Re: Alpha release

Posted by Serge Knystautas <se...@lokitech.com>.
Mike,

Basically we have to create an approach to map domain names to some
username... could be domain.username, username.domain, or just force
everyone to use unique usernames across domains. Then maybe change the
admin code a bit so it's easier to jump from domain to the next, rather than
requiring the admin to remember the coding system.

I'm not sure what else is necessary beyond that. Someone in theory could
want different processing based on different domains, but I figure most
won't, and if they do, they can add the appropriate matchers and processors
to get things going. A decent howto file could explain that rather easily.

Hey everyone,

I'm not sure if I'll have the time to work on this, but I'm definitely
interested in finding out about what it would take to get virtual host
support working with James. I've taken a look at a few classes, and will
continue to do so, but it's apparently already been on somebody's mind
(since I remember seeing it in documentation somewhere as a coming feature)
so if that somebody wouldn't mind jotting down a few sentences to point me
in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance - I'll be trying to puzzle out what it would take on my
own too,

Mike

I don't have any voting rights but you get a +1 from me!

I hope, one of your patches is the sql context problem
