QUESTION == how to I open a new document
To whom can “help”
I have just upgraded and down loaded Open Office 4.1.1 but cannot load a new document or excel – can you advise me please where to find these – otherwise editing existing documents a excel files works well and it is good to have the spell check back.
thanks
Peter Martin

To open a NEW document, use File -> New…; from the dropdown, select Text document, spreadsheet, drawing, etc., as you require.

Alternately, right click on a document of the type you wish to open with OpenOffice, select Open With from the popup and then select OpenOffice from the applications offered. At the bottom of the Open With window there may be an "always open with this application" words to that effect) link. It is usually best to select this.

For a NEW document, use /File /New, select the type of document you want, then /File /Save As and give it a name. Make sure "Automatic file name extension is checked" on the Save As window. If you need to change the file type, in that window use the File type dropdown to select the correct type.

In OpenOffice /File /Open, then use the navigation buttons to move to the directory holding the existing document. Alternately, right click on a document of the type you wish to open with OpenOffice, select Open With from the popup and then select OpenOffice from the applications offered. At the bottom of the Open With window there may be an "always open with this application" words to that effect) link. It is usually best to select this.

I assume that the recipient does not necessarily have OO. This being the case, there are the following options:
- export as PDF
- save in MS Word format [.doc]. This can be opened in either preview [part of the Mac OS] or Pages [a word processor that will import MS Word] - either part of the latest Mac OS versions or free from the app store.
