Here is a what Tomcat reported in the console when my application would not launch:

SEVERE: Error listenerStart
Feb 23, 2007 12:08:02 AM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start
SEVERE: Context [/Leads_WS] startup failed due to previous errors

"Previous errors" is unacceptable - show me a stack trace!

Can you provide a simple test war that exhibits this problem? Looking at the
source, the relevant stack trace should be logged just before the two messages
you included in your log extract.

I have an idea what might be going on to cause this problem but a test case
would make fixing it easier.

The stack trace you are looking for is in the host log. The name and location
can vary with system configuration but by default it is
$CATALINA_HOME/log/localhost.yyy-mm-dd.log
