[Issue 126639] New: Norton Securit identifies En-US language pack as
potentially dangerous and removes it upon download
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126639
Issue ID: 126639
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Norton Securit identifies En-US language pack as
potentially dangerous and removes it upon download
Product: Installation
Version: 4.1.2
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows 7
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P5
Component: ui
Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Reporter: ylavon@actcom.co.il
This issue concerns the US English language pack for 4.1.2. I have downloaded
it several times, but each time Norton 360 Internet Security determines that
"there are many indications that this file is untrustworthy and is therefore
not safe," and removes the file immediately. Norton calls this
"WS.Reputation.1", which you may read about at
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2010-051308-1854-99&vid=4294919973&product=Norton%20360%20Premier&version=22.5.4.24&plang=sym:EN&layouttype=ESD&buildname=Retail&heartbeatID=9EF4AB0D-3AC7-4223-B826-930D11D68C0A&env=prod&vendorid=&plid=161&plgid=4&skup=21205784&skum=21349210&skuf=21207030&endpointid=9EF4AB0D-3AC7-4223-B826-930D11D68C0A&partnerid=&lic_type=16&lic_attr=16928786&psn=V3XRPD6TGM7C&puid=5039&osvers=6.1&oslocale=iso:USA&oslang=iso:ENG&os=windows
I have no idea what the problem is, but in this condition the Language Pack,
which I need urgently, is unusable, since I cannot install it.
It is possible that someone has managed to infect your file with a virus or
malware or worm. Please examine this matter as soon as possible and correct it.
Understand, until Norton Security gives me the OK I dare not even attempt to
install the Pack. The risk is too great. So please investigate and correct as
quickly as possible.

This is very likely a false positive report like it happens often.
You can check the file integrity with checksums. You can get them on the same
webpage where you have downloaded the install file [1].
Then you can do the steps like they are described here [2].
When both checksums (from the install file and the separate file) are equal,
then the file is OK and it is a false positive report. If there is a way to
exclude the install file from being blocked, then I would do it.
