[Issue 126653] New: Slide Pane - Jumps to first slide unexpectedly

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126653

          Issue ID: 126653
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Slide Pane - Jumps to first slide unexpectedly
           Product: Impress
           Version: 4.1.2
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 7
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Trivial
          Priority: P5 (lowest)
         Component: viewing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: bezprismotra@gmail.com

The Slide Pane jumps to the top unexpectedly when I click in the margin between
two slides. The first slide is also displayed when it is not desired, as part
of this behavior. This happens when the first slide is not selected and when
the vertical scroll-bar is not at the top.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open an Impress document which contains more than one slide.
2) Ensure the View -> Slide Pane panel is open.
3) If necessary, resize the application window so that the Slide Pane panel
displays a vertical scroll-bar.
4) Scroll the vertical scroll-bar by any amount.
5) Select a slide other than the first slide.
6) In the Slide Pane, click on any white-space around or between the slide
thumbnails.

Note: Steps 4 and 5 are interchangeable.

Actual Result:
When a left-click is performed, the Slide Pane view scrolls all the way to the
top and the first slide is selected and consequently is displayed in the
primary content window.

When a right-click is performed, the same action occurs, but the context menu
is also presented. The context menu shows the text "<No selection possible>".

Expected Result:
A left-click on any of the white-space in this situation typically should not
cause any visible action.

Performing a right-click should present a context menu with the appropriate
content (the content may be different when extensions are installed).

The Slide Pane behaves as expected when I click on a slide, rather than within
the white-space.

I was able to replicate this issue running
* OpenOffice Impress 4.1.2 on
* Mac OS 10.11.4

Steps to replicate:
1) Open either file provided by Terri Brooks: Impress presentation with 7
slides or Impress document with 2 slides.
2) Ensure Slide Pane panel is open (located under View menu)
3) Select slide 2 or later in the slide pane panel. (Selected slide should
display).
4A) Left-click in any white space within the slide pane panel. The displayed
slide changes to the first slide in both the main window and the slide pane
panel.

This is inconsistent with the behavior in MS PowerPoint (Office 2016 for Mac)
where the slide displayed is the one nearest the area clicked. Boundary.jpg
illustrates the area around a slide that automatically navigates a user to that
slide.

4B) Right-click in any white space within the slide pane panel and the context
menu appears but there is no change in the displayed slide. However, if you
right-click a second time, you are navigated to the first slide in the
presentation.

This is also inconsistent with behavior in MS PowerPoint (Office 2016 for Mac)
where the context menu is displayed and user is navigated to the slide nearest
the area clicked. See again Boundary.jpg.

Users switching from MS Office are likely to expect a similar behavior in
Impress and will find it annoying to be navigated to the first slide in the
presentation if they accidentally click white area in the slide pane panel.

Changed to Enhancement request. The objection here is that the behavior is not
the same as Microsoft PowerPoint.

It should be pointed out that Impress was not offered as a work-alike to
PowerPoint. That is not part of the design of the ODF file format and it was
not in the thinking when Impress was offered as an alternative (not as a
work-alike).

This is not an objection to the request. It is pointing out that it is not a
defect just because it doesn't work the same.

I am marking this as confirmed, in that the Impress behavior is as replicated
by the contributors.

If it is desired that being a Microsoft PowerPoint work-alike become a goal for
Impress, that needs to be taken up on the developer list,
dev@openoffice.apache.org. I don't know that the project would agree to this
and I also don't know where the capability would come from even if there were
agreement. It is fair to bring it up though.

(In reply to Terri Brooks from comment #2)

I need to clarify steps 4 & 6 above. I neglected to state that you need to
click white space within the "Slide Pane" area in order to replicate the
behavior. Please see revised steps below:

Step 4 should read:

4. Left-click in any white-space area around a slide in the Slide Pane.
Expected Results: No impact expected.
Actual Results: The first slide is now selected in the Slide Pane panel and
the main window changes to display the first slide instead of the one
selected in step 3.

Step 6 should read:

6. Now right-click in any white-space area around the slide in the Slide Panel
Expected Results: Right click context menu will display.
Actual Results: Context menu displays however; same as left-click – the
first slide is now selected in the Slide Pane and the main window changes to
display the first slide instead of the slide selected in step 5

I was able to recreate this issue using Windows 7 Enterprise and Open Office
version 4.1.2. Additionally, I was able to produce the issue regardless if the
scroll bar is displayed in the Slide Pane panel or not.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a multi-page presentation in Impress.

2.Ensure the Slide Pane is showing (Go to View > Slide Pane to display if not)

3.In the Slide Pane select any slide other than the first one.
Expected Results: Selected slide displays in the Main Window Pane.
Actual Results: The selected slide displays as expected.

4. Left-click in any white-space area around a slide.
Expected Results: No impact expected.
Actual Results: The first slide is now selected in the Slide Pane panel and the
main window changes to display the first slide instead of the one selected in
step 3.

5. Once again select another slide other than the first one.
Expected Results: Selected slide displays in the Main Window Pane.
Actual Results: The selected slide displays as expected.

6. Now right-click in any white-space area around the slide.
Expected Results: Right click context menu will display.
Actual Results: Context menu displays however; same as left-click – the first
slide is now selected in the Slide Pane and the main window changes to display
the first slide instead of the slide selected in step 5

I have tested with a 7 slide document to force the vertical scroll and a 2
slide document to test with no vertical scroll and encountered the issue
regardless. I have attached both documents for purposes of replicating this
issue.
