[GitHub] [bookkeeper] merlimat opened a new pull request, #3968: Added support for OpenTelemetry metrics backend
merlimat opened a new pull request, #3968:
URL: https://github.com/apache/bookkeeper/pull/3968
### Motivation
Added support for collecting and exporting BK metrics through OpenTelemetry SDK.
The instruments are using counters and histogram. Summaries with pre-computed quantiles are not used anymore. Histograms have a much lower overhead in the bookie process.
The SDK is set to use the autoconfigure. The exporter can be configured through env variables as described in https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-java/blob/main/sdk-extensions/autoconfigure/README.md
eg: simplest case to export in Prometheus format:
```
OTEL_METRICS_EXPORTER=prometheus
```
This will make the metrics available on `http://0.0.0.0:9464/metrics`

We can make the module as the sub-module of `Apache BookKeeper :: Stats :: Parent` instead of the sub-module of the root.

In the original implementation, they made a great effort to take attributes from the current thread. Isn't it helpful?

This should be upDownCounter. Gauges are, by definition, values, you can't aggregate across attribute sets like the temperature of a room - doing a sum for all rooms is meaningless.

Better do it how they do it:
```
meter
.upDownCounterBuilder("process.runtime.jvm.memory.usage")
.setDescription("Measure of memory used")
.setUnit("By")
.buildWithCallback(callback(poolBeans, MemoryPoolMXBean::getUsage, MemoryUsage::getUsed));
```

why don't make it's parent at `bookkeeper-stats-providers`. I see `prometheus-stats-provider` and `codahale-metrics-provider` 's parent is `bookkeeper-stats-providers`.
