It's hard to say anything useful about this without knowing what your document 
and stylesheet were. 

Note that D6 is sufficiently ancient that it's going to be hard to convince 
folks to spend much time debugging it; we just released D13. Normally I'd say 
"upgrade to the latest release and see if that helps." However, current versions 
of Xalan do have known document size limits (more accurately: known limits on 
the number of nodes in a document). We're working on that, but at the moment 
it's simply an accepted limitation. There's been some discussion of workarounds 
in the mailing list.
