should we then change the wiki to be just about how one can access hdfs via C? With a link to hdfs.h (the api) ?

And then link to that from the front page under some title like how to access hdfs from non-Java clients?

I gave this a quick try as it is definitely an improvement to the current state. I documented how I think the FileSystem.get "filesystem handle cache" ?? works. Namely that within a single thread whenever calling fs.get with the same params, the same handle is returned and it is not thread safe.

would be good if there was forrest docs for that that I could link to, but I couldn't find anything.

Anything that will change as libhdfs evolves should ideally be in subversion. So this should really be converted to forrest format, updated, and included in the official docs, no?

[jira] Commented: (HADOOP-4105) libhdfs wiki is very out-of-date and contains mostly broken links

This is in part why the wiki should not be considered authoritative documentation. The preferred way to fix this would be to add documentation to trunk that is updated as the code is patched and replace this wiki content with a link to the official documentation on the website. The wiki is best for community information, not for code documentation.

I think the text I put in about thread safety and FileSystem.get file handles is wrong.

1. The Cache seems to look only at the filesystem being connected to and the user, if specified.
2 For the DFSClient at least, it looks completely thread safe - it seems at the lowest level to always use synchronized methods

I haven't yet looked a lot at what happens if you get 2 FSInput (or Output) streams and try to read/write to them at the same time.

The "-L../../../libhdfs" assumes that folks are putting their code somewhere in Hadoop's tree? Shouldn't that rather be something under ROOT/? Also, you might replace ROOT/ with ${HADOOP_HOME}/.

This still says, "it is not compiled by default".

Also, the linking example uses, ../build/libhdfs, which is not where libhdfs is found in releases.

This could still go into 0.19: documentation patches are accepted (encouraged even) after the branch. It would be great to have.

Some comments:
 - there's non-code text inside source tags
 - the example isn't a complete, compileable file
 - absolute links to headers in trunk and the javadoc on the website should not be included in versioned documentation. rather these should be relative to the release packaging. there are lots of examples of links to javadocs in other documentation pages. to link to the header could be tricky and might best be just be some text saying to look in 'src/c++/libhdfs'. to check your relative links, use 'ant package', then browse build/hadoop-xxx'.
 - the included compilation instructions should be for compiling the example, not for building libhdfs. libhdfs should be pre-built in releases. this documentation is for users of libhdfs, not developers of it.
