jakarta-jmeter-2.4 >> ant package >> BUILD FAILED

Hi all,

I am new to this project and very frustrated that
jakarta-jmeter-2.4_src.zip does "BUILD FAILED" on
\> ant package
command with misleading message ".\jakarta-jmeter-2.4\lib\api does not exist."
I realise that the project has dependencies, but found no info in
documentation.
As suggested on build web page http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/building.html
\> ant download_jars
ends in error "Exception: Connection timed out: connect".
The only mentioning on the build web page is "This will ensure that
the lib/ directory contains all the required jar files."

1)
Would be nice to mention about how to download mandatory dependencies
for the project on the page, just in case if "ant download_jars" does
not work by some reason.

2)
Extracting jar names from build file is not simple and takes time.
In fact it looks like all jar files are in jakarta-jmeter-2.4.zip
"binary distr" anyway and it makes no sense to me to tie people to
"ant/build" download functionality which is broken somehow.

Suggestion:
make all project dependencies easily available as
jakarta-jmeter-2.4_src-dependencies.zip

and replace target download_jars to build_dependencies_zip to help one
in charge for project release build.

If I make jakarta-jmeter-2.4_src-dependencies.zip file to resolve
build ugly error
".\lib\api does not exist."" how can I submit it to the project?

Regards,
Slav.

Because the binary archive is only for the run-time dependencies.

Most people want the runtime only; adding unnecessary jars to it just
wastes resources.

There's no problem if you use download_jars, which is what the page says to do.

If jar files move, then a bug is raised and the problem is fixed.

The binary archive is already correct.

The source code archive is for source only, and contains a copy of
what is in SVN.

OK, that is worth doing.

I tested on Windows and everything downloaded OK, apart from xstream
(which is already fixed in SVN).

There must be an issue with your Windows installation.

Here we back to initial point. Why don't freeze all dependencies in
archive file at release time?
That should:
1) simplify effort of any one who wants to join the project and run
build in his local env ;
2) protects project from misses or changes at dependency file source
(better initial impression for jmeter project);
3) would allow binary release be what it should be (there may be
different flavors of binary releases) and
all source code dependencies to be in one archive.

In any case statement on build web page should be rewritten to stay
clearly that online access is required to run build and
"ant download_jars" is mandatory pre request.

Please, do not waist your time on this issue. I run same commands on
linux env with similar versions of tools and
"ant download_jars" get finished successfully. Next "ant package" was
success too.
I guess it could be some specific to windows implementations of tools.

Here is exact versions used on linux:
Apache Ant version 1.8.0 compiled on April 9 2010
java version "1.6.0_20"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode)

Same here.

Works OK for me with 1.6.0_20 and 1.6.0_22 (I don't have 21 installed).

If you try running "ant download_jars" in a source-only directory tree
(ie. without the jars from the binary archive) what happens?

Do the other downloads mainly work?
Or do most fail?

I've found that the Xstream jar has been moved, but otherwise
everything downloads for me.

Yes. There are some dependencies that are only needed at compile time.

The bcmail jars are optional at run-time, which is why they are not in
the binary archive.

Apache Ant version 1.8.1 compiled on April 30 2010

java version "1.6.0_21"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_21-b07)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 17.0-b17, mixed mode, sharing)

I'll try to run this command under linux env on different pc to see if
it has to do something with system setup.

What error do you get?

I assume you are referring to the missing lib/api directory here?

This is created by the ant download_jars command, but towards the end,
so if the command fails earlier it won't get created.

However, the following should work:

Unpack source and binary archives (distributions)
ant download_jars - needed to get a few extra jars
ant package

2) To get dependencies as simple as uzip jakarta-jmeter-2.4.zip in
same folder as jakarta-jmeter-2.4_src.zip

You said: "Or you can download the binary archive for a release and unpack it
into the same directory structure as the source. This will ensure that
the lib/ directory contains all the required jar files. "
Unfortunately this FIX does not work as you want to see it and
required extra manual juggling.
Just try it on fresh PC !!!!
unzipped jakarta-jmeter-2.4.zip (binary DESTIBUTION archive) in
jakarta-jmeter-2.4\ (jakarta-jmeter-2.4_src.zip) folder
>ant package
...
BUILD FAILED
..\jakarta-jmeter-2.4\lib\api does not exist.

I can fix all those missed dir and etc manually. Just does not
understand why a simple task as "ant build" would require such steps.
Does not add value to the JMeter project.

Fact that Hudson and Gump builds OK does not prove one can simple run
"ant download_jars
" as mentioned on the page. I have got an error. Unzipped bin
distribution, still get error.
All I am asking is a simple one step zip file with all dependencies
(jar and dir) to get build run on fresh clean pc.

The download page says:

"Or you can download the binary archive for a release and unpack it
into the same directory structure as the source. This will ensure that
the lib/ directory contains all the required jar files. "

They are all in build.properties which is easier to read.

Yes, that is an alternative method, which is already documented.

It's not broken for everyone, as the Hudson and Gump builds work OK.

No point - they are all in the bin archive anyway.

Patches are submitted via Bugzilla.

But in this case at most a documentation update is needed.
