TIF graphics

I've got a strange problem with TIF graphhics....

When I use <fo:external-graphic src="file:LF4337-1.tif" />,I get this error message:

After writing out PDF

Error in XObject : Error while loading image file : LF4337-1.tif : Class java.lang.ClassCastException - Null

When I replace the tif extension with jpg, so I get 
<fo:external-graphic src="file:LF4337-1.jpg" /> (without converting the graphic to jpg), no problems !!

Could you please help me..
