Report Proposal (Sept. 2015)

Here is the proposal for the September Report. Comments and feedback welcome.

--------------------
Johnzon

Implementation of JSR-353 JavaTM API for JSON Processing.

Johnzon has been incubating since 2014-06-09.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Expanding the community, increase dev list activity and adding new
     committers/pmc members
  2. Complete the project incubation status page
  3. Add and improve documentation

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

  * Nothing

How has the community developed since the last report?

There are new people on the dev list and the project got contributions
from non-committers. On the dev list there are approx. 30 msgs (on
average) messages per month. We will present Johnzon at ApacheCon Europe,
maybe we can attract some people there to join the project.

How has the project developed since the last report?

The project did its 7th incubator release.
During the last three month 10 jira issues were reported and fixed.
Project has also started to implement the upcoming JSR-374 specification.

Date of last release:

  2015-AUG-17 (0.9-incubating)

When were the last committers or PMC members elected?

Last committer was elected 2014-08-23, last PMC member was elected
  2015-04-09 (Hendrik Saly)

+!, in particular since this kind of project get community "when needed"
and since we are active enough ATM the need is not that important so I
think it is time to graduate maybe

I agree with Justin and i tend into the same direction as Romain (own
TLP). My idea was to await ApacheCon to see if we can attract a few
more people there to join the project. But i'am also open to start the
discussion right now.

Agree for BatchEE, maybe even bval but I really see johnzon as not jsr
first but json first (JSR being here just a "bonus").

My feeling is that we lately created lots of projects for JSR specs. And those are mostly handled by the same people over and over again. Thus there is the risk that it mostly adds orga overhead and splits up the community.

And _tons_ of geronimo projects are extremly usable in JavaSE as well - e.g. TX or xbean. So despite Johnzon is not only working in EE it still mostly about a JSR impl, isn’t?

Again: this should just be a thing we discuss openly. I have no cleared up my mind myself yet.

-1 as subproject, this is json so really wider than EE as "traction" -
compared to BatchEE for instance which will still be stamped EE even if
usable in SE.

Either to a TLP or a subproject of a well known project like Geronimo or TomEE.

Although TomEE has more ’traction’ I would prefer Geronimo as it already hosts lots of ‚commons-EE‘ stuff like XBean, Geronimo-transaction, the specs, etc.

Hi,

Perhaps we should consider graduating to be a TLP? I know community growth could an issue but I’m not sure what more the incubator can teach / help / guide the project.

Thanks,
