Apache JSecurity/Ki rename - please submit suggestions!

Hi Apache Community.

It seems as if our recently changed name of Apache Ki is not free from
potential naming conflict problems, and we'll need to change our name again.

So, we're reaching out to everyone and anyone who would like to contribute a
new name to the suggestion pool. Here's how the process will work:

1. All new names will be accepted by anyone for 1 week. Starting now,
ending 27 May 2009 Midnight GMT-8.
2. We'll present the compiled list of submitted names in a new email.
Everyone will have 72 hours to vote on their favorite.
3. The top 5 names by vote count will be the finalists.
4. 72 more hours to vote to reduce the list to 2 final names.
5. 1 final 72 hour period to vote on one of these 2 names. The name that
wins by simple majority will be the new project name.

Please ensure any name submission is free and clear to the best of your
knowledge from any Trademarks or Patents by performing a search [1]. Also
if you can get little or no results in Google and Yahoo, that would be a
great candidate too.

Name submission starts NOW.

We look forward to all name suggestions, and we appreciate anyone who wishes
to participate!

Thanks so much,

Les Hazlewood

My recollection of the discussion was that the recommendations where
a) don't ask the party that might be infringed on for permission, b)
it is OK to wait for the project to wait until they are contacted, if
ever, before doing anything. Ironically, shortly before this
discussion there was another project that had clearly infringed on
someone else's trademark, was contacted by them, and at the
recommendation of our attorneys the project name was changed fairly
painlessly. The answers I saw to this thread were all in line with
what they attorneys had discussed in that instance.

In short, I have never understood why JSecurity decided to change its
name. IIRC the only potential conflict was with a company that didn't
actually produce a software product with that name and that company
has never contacted us, despite JSecurity having been around for quite
a while.

There are a number of Apache products that have security features that
may not appreciate us laying claim to us being *the* Apache security
project. The ASF has always had a policy of letting a thousand
flowers bloom and frowns in umbrella projects.

IIRC, as the JSecurity thread evolved the community realized that it
wanted to be so much more than just Java and so the name JSecurity
fell out of favor.

Along similar lines, how about Apache Sikkert ('security' in Danish)?

Or something more like the old name. Maybe XJSecurity or XSecureJ
(eXtensible Security for Java) or something?

Is XSJ an option? Google doesn't yield any real solid top hits for it
besides a photoframe model number...

I was looking around on the gateway/bridge type theme that Ki has and came
across 'Toran'

*Toran*
To"ran\, Torana \To"ra*na\, n. [Skr. t[=o]ra[.n]a an arch, a gate.] (Indian
Arch.) A gateway, commonly of wood, but sometimes of stone, consisting of
two upright pillars carrying one to three transverse lintels. It is often
minutely carved with symbolic sculpture, and serves as a monumental approach
to a Buddhist temple.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/toran

So I suggest Apache Toran, only about 3 hits on Google as well for that
actual word so ranking would be high.

Bradley

Well, I was going to suggest:

Apache Jaysec

It is true to the original name, but sufficiently different not to
cause confusion.

However, in the Google results, I found posts saying they didn't like
JSec for the sound in the previous vote, which would have the same
problem.

It still might be worth considering, as it has such a low number of
hits on google (<1000), and the conflicts are all sufficiently
different that it shouldn't cause confusion:
- gojaysec.com
- http://jaysec.co.uk/ (only security related one, but it's CCTV).

Good luck!

Cheers,

Re: Apache JSecurity/Ki rename - please submit suggestions!

Good luck!

Cheers,
Brett

Another solution is to invent a new word.

I devised a tool to create new names.
It has recently been accepted as a new project at Apache Labs [1].
"Using existing relevant words as a starting point, Penihip
applies a specified offset number of characters to shift along the
alphabet, thereby creating new words. The consonants and vowels are
shifted within their own set. Therefore the generated words are more
likely able to be spoken."

Encrypting a word seems especially relevant for a security-related project.

My choice is "Tidasif".

This comes from the word "Secured" using an offset of one character.
So "S" becomes "T", "e" becomes "i", "c" becomes "d", etc.

Searching the net for "+tidasif" gives 3 hits, all nonsense.

Alternatively "Tidasi" (from "Secure"). That is more
pronouncable and memorable, which is another quality to
look for in a name. However, search finds some uses of the
name, also when combined with "security".

Try it yourself. A fun way to waste some more time on names.

And when you get the C&D letter from Kimberly-Clark, will request ASF
to stand the ground and let it go to court?

there are many others.

OK, but I doubt anyone, anywhere was going to get confused by
JSecurity. I never understood why the PMC thought the conflict
warranted a name change.

The time frame for submitting suggestions has ended.

I'll post the compiled list of all suggestions soon. At that time, we start
the voting process for the top five names. After they're received, there
will be one final vote between the top two names. The one with a simple
majority will be the new name.

Cheers,

Les

Yeah this really needs to get sorted out as priority #1 so the project can
move forward. Changing names (and hence packages etc) really does hold up a
lot of folks and may have them opt to go elsewhere.

And when you get the C&D letter from Kimberly-Clark, will request ASF
to stand the ground and let it go to court?

I have a really good chance of getting away with the software project
"Apache Kleenex" because the Kleenex registration refers to a paper

But it does not matter that your software product only shares part of a name
with another software product, or that the two types of software do entirely
different thing. The question is always one of confusion (deliberate or

Oh, and as for the other Apache names having results on TESS, that is
probably because the names are used in completely different industries or
'domains' - something that is usually ok for overlap.

Or if there is anything that comes along with a similar or same name in the
software space, then these Apache projects would probably still be safe as
they would be probably identified as "prior art" [1], having a historical
record (website, mailing lists) proving they were the first to use it in any
recognizable capacity.

IANAL either, but I hope that helps.

Hi Maarten,

It started based on this post:

This apparently was enough for the Incubator to be concerned, hence this new
renaming effort.

Hi Les,

Sorry my bad hadn't noticed that; That would really be funny, trying to
register a name used by the trademark office itself :-)

Another thing that crossed my mind is that you could also name it after
yourself; Since it is your name, anyone will have a hard time claiming a
IP infringement. Like the Mike Rowe case for example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_v._MikeRoweSoft

I don't know if Apache would like such a naming scheme though.

Kind regards,

Jasper

Re: Apache JSecurity/Ki rename - please submit suggestions!

Posted by Les Hazlewood <lh...@apache.org>.
Hi Jasper,

engine: http://www.uspto.gov/main/trademarks.htm

Cheers,

Les

Re: Apache JSecurity/Ki rename - please submit suggestions!

Hi All,

Regarding the name Tess; I know that the automated assistant of Ziggo
(largest cable provider here in the Netherlands) is called Tess. Not
really in the same field, it is software however.

Kind regards,

Jasper

Hi Les,

What I actually meant is this:
In your original post, you're saying "It seems as if our recently changed
name of Apache Ki is not free from potential naming conflict problems"
Where does this info come from ? Is this info backed by an entry in the
TESS database ? Or an entry in another "intellectual property" database ?

Best regards
Maarten

Re: Apache JSecurity/Ki rename - please submit suggestions!

Posted by Les Hazlewood <lh...@apache.org>.
Hi Maarten,

This is a good question.

There is nothing in TESS that shows a potential naming conflict other than a
result. That is, if you execute a search for all active entries, and a
result comes up, odds are high that it would not be a good candidate. Or if
you do see a result, be sure it is not software related in any way.

You're right that "Apache Ki" would have been the official name if it stood,
but the Incubator seemed to come to a consensus that we should change the
name just in case. They felt it would be best to find a name with no
overlap anywhere, just to be safe; they're trying to limit the possibility
of anyone starting legal action contending for a name - they could not
afford to deal with that if it ever surfaced.

Cheers,

Les

Apache Narsil

Narsil is the sword of Kind Elendil in Lord Of The Rings. Which acts
as a symbol of great power and protection in the hands of who's
carrying it.
