In computer jargon (at least in American jargon), "filesystem" is actually
more correct. Kind of like "email" instead of "E-mail". The phrase has been
used so much that the words have merged.

Either that, or many (American?) IT workers are semi-literate. But I shan't be
drawn into discussions about proper spelling and the Queen's English. :-p

Nope, that's a filing system, not a file system.
I say, this thread is becoming less boring by the minute! :-)

I'd say "filesystem" is the more appropriate term in this context. It's
a technical term, with a very specific meaning, unlike "file system"
with could be any system of files. "File system" might, for example,
refer to a particular method of organizing pieces of paper in folders
stored in a metal cabinet.

You're right, my spellchecker doesn't like "filesystem" either. And neither
does dictionary.com. Google?
http://www.google.com/search?q=filesystem -> 520,000 pages
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22file%20system%22 -> 1,090,000 pages
Hmm, maybe I am in the minority after all. Well, the fact that "filesystem"
has been used probably millions of times on all those pages means it's about
as close to a real word as you can get. I wouldn't worry about it :)

Yes, I ran it through ispell. I ignored HOWTO and WALKTHROUGH but when I saw
that it barked on filesystem I took a look in
/opt/kernel/linux/Documentation/filesystems/ what they used. The file I
looked in used "file system" :=)
Later after I had sent the patch I took another look and I saw that
"filesystem" was used way more in the kernel docs...
I knew, I knew, I should have spent the time looking for why svn gave me an
error when I tried to commit svn:ignore changes for a directory instead of
the spelling thingie :=)
Thanks,
Per

So are we going to see words like l33t and d00d "patched" into the Oxford
English Dictionary? Because those words are also spelt correctly in their
domain...
only kidding but you get my drift... ;-)

Heh, don't even get me *started* on the use of dictionaries as blanket
sources of authority instead of as references to usage in unfamiliar
domains.
This particular domain is very familiar to all of us; if we know that
"filesystem" is common, and the spell checkers don't, then it's time
to submit a patch to the spell checkers :-).

Have you asked a spelling checker? All of mine prefer "file system" over
"filesystem". I bet Per's does, too. I'm tempted to check in this
change, just to make the language mix in our documents more colourful. :-)
Sadly, there are about 50 other "filesystems" in just the few files in
the root of the source tree, and gods know how many elsewhere. That's
more trouble than I'm prepared to go to, so I just fixed the
"walktrough" nit. Thanks, Per!
P.S.: Fear not, I'm sure we'll have an English translation of the docs
sooner or later. And a Swedish one too, no doubt! :-)

Agreed. Filesystem seems to be the most common spelling.
