file mapper newbie question

Hi,
 
I tried to setup a test to see if an entire directory (and
subdirectories) was uptodate, like this :
 
<uptodate property="apache.docs.OK"">
    <srcfiles dir="${dist.dir}/apache/docs"/>
    <mapper type="identity" to="${apache.docs.dir}"/>
</uptodate>
 
but it does not detect that some files are Not uptodate
 
how should I write such test ?
I read and reread documentation about mapper type without beeing able
to figure out how to do it
