The colors will apply to individual columns, but not the grid, which looks odd. 

To reproduce:

    <s:DataGrid width="100%" height="100%"
                alternatingRowColors="[ 0x0FF0000, 0x00FF00 ]">
        <s:columns>
            <s:ArrayList>
                <s:GridColumn maxWidth="10"/>
            </s:ArrayList>
        </s:columns>
    </s:DataGrid>

You will notice that the area to the right of the column does not display the row colors.
