Podling Report Reminder - July 2016

Dear podling,

This email was sent by an automated system on behalf of the Apache
Incubator PMC. It is an initial reminder to give you plenty of time to
prepare your quarterly board report.

The board meeting is scheduled for Wed, 20 July 2016, 10:30 am PDT.
The report for your podling will form a part of the Incubator PMC
report. The Incubator PMC requires your report to be submitted 2 weeks
before the board meeting, to allow sufficient time for review and
submission (Wed, July 06).

Please submit your report with sufficient time to allow the Incubator
PMC, and subsequently board members to review and digest. Again, the
very latest you should submit your report is 2 weeks prior to the board
meeting.

Thanks,

The Apache Incubator PMC

Submitting your Report

----------------------

Your report should contain the following:

*   Your project name
* A brief description of your project, which assumes no knowledge of
the project or necessarily of its field
* A list of the three most important issues to address in the move
    towards graduation.
* Any issues that the Incubator PMC or ASF Board might wish/need to be
    aware of
* How has the community developed since the last report
* How has the project developed since the last report.

This should be appended to the Incubator Wiki page at:

http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/July2016

Note: This is manually populated. You may need to wait a little before
this page is created from a template.

Mentors
-------

Mentors should review reports for their project(s) and sign them off on
the Incubator wiki page. Signing off reports shows that you are
following the project - projects that are not signed may raise alarms
for the Incubator PMC.

Pony Mail is not special in any sense WRT GitHub. Any project is free to
use issues, though I realize we have issues in that you need to do a
whitespace commit (or a fix) to close an issue. I think perhaps we
should start discussing having JIRA supplement this.

I believe there are multiple things to take into account here:

First off, Ulises and I (who make up the current bulk of development and
testing) have been busy with another project, so our available cycles
for Pony Mail have been very limited this month. Nothing nefarious here,
just busy with $otherwork :)

Secondly, we have seen a rather large influx of issues but, to the best
of my knowledge, no patches or programmatic suggestions, which would
suggest we are not currently attracting any developers (read:
programmers) to the project. This is something we should work on, but I
think it's way too early to start considering this an actual problem.

We could perhaps discuss how to attract such people? I am very open to
any suggestions others may have, and will also look into ways of getting
new developers started myself.

Unfortunately, we are still lacking responses from some of the people
who initially wanted to contribute to the project. I don't know if it's
due to a lack of interest or if they are just super busy elsewhere.

0.9b has not been released, no, but lists.apache.org has been displaying
0.9b since it started. The reason you are seeing 0.9b is because the
version marker for the _master_ branch was moved to 0.9b when 0.8b was
released (before incubation started). So what you are seeing is simply a
company using the master branch or a derivative thereof. This would be
akin to someone using httpd 2.5, which hasn't been released either but
still has a version number attached to it.

With my infra hat on, I have added you as a moderator of the lists now.
Apart from the various archives (4 of them, I believe), we have 13
people on the dev@ list and 7 on the users@ list. I'll ping Andrew and
ask about his whereabouts.

With regards,
Daniel.

Re: Podling Report Reminder - July 2016

Daniel,

Thanks for posting the report. I do think there's a few issues that
warrant some notice in the board report.

- PonyMail is using, what I would consider to be, an unapproved bug
tracking process. I know you referenced me to VP legal, but realistically
this is a broader discussion item beyond VP Legal. I am not comfortable
with present state and am seeing it cause issues as a precedence for other
projects. I've been asked twice recently "Why is PonyMail special?"
- Mailing lists activities basically went dark on June 4, 2016. I haven't
seen anything, other than github issues and one off email since then.
- I believe this PMC needs to make branding and discussion a priority. I'm
concerned that some company not affiliated with the PMC is now hosting
instances of PonyMail in a production like manner, as evidenced by the
change in footer available at https://lists.apache.org/ , which now
references an (unreleased) v0.9b of PonyMail and links back to the podling
website. If a release has gone out with this version number, the incubator
is not aware of it.

John

BTW - Since the mailing lists were created outside of Incubator norm and
the mentors are not moderators, I can't see who's subscribed. Can you tell
if Andrew Bayer is subscribed to the PM lists? What do our subscriber
stats look like?

Assuming no one else volunteers (or objects), I'll get started on this
month's report :)

With regards,
Daniel.
