In my simple testing for SOLR-6816, I can see that raising the number of buckets to 1024 from 256 seems to do nothing, but raising it to 65536 seem to give performance similar to removing the sync entirely.

We should probably make the number of buckets configurable, consider our default, and review the hashing that is going on.
