Specialization : which package ?

Hello,

I'm new to log4j community.

I'd like to write a specialization of the FileAppender class for my project.

Am I free to use (also by a legal point of view) the package
"org.apache.log4j" and create inside it a class that extends the
FileAppender or must I create a new package (com.xxx.mypackage) ?
