Jackrabbit versioning - newbie questions

I've been trying to find out how to use versioning in jackrabbit.  Every
reference I've found indicates that you have to programmatically add
mix:versionable to the node.  Does the jackrabbit-provided web interface do
this by default?  If not, can it be configured to do so, or does it require
patching the web interface?
