[Issue 125625] New: Image anchored "to paragraph" does not print in pdf or print preview, but prints when anchored "as character"

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125625

          Issue ID: 125625
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Image anchored "to paragraph" does not print in pdf or
print preview, but prints when anchored "as character"
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: major
          Priority: P3
         Component: save-export
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: alain.baudhuin@skynet.be

Please see files provided at
http://www.cspu.be/~baudhuina/openofficeIssue_ImageAnchoredToCharacter/

See file FileWithImage.odt, resulting in FileWithImage.pdf: at §2.1.2, figure
16 "Fonction arc cosinus" is perfectly ok (it isat p. 14 in the pdf file).

See file FileWithoutImage.odt, resulting in FileWithoutImage.odt: at §2.1.2,
figure 16 is present and visible, but in the pdf file, the figure is an empty
white placeholder (see p.14 in pdf file)

The only difference between the two files: in FileWithImage.odt, the figure is
anchored to the paragraph (within the caption frame), while in
FileWithoutImage.odt, the figure is anchored "as character" (within the caption
frame). You can easily cause the problem in the FileWithoutImage.odt, just by
right-clicking on the image and changing the anchor to "as character" and
regenerate the pdf file.

I've tried to reduce the size of the file to isolate the problem but didn't
succeed: a file including juste the page holding the image is ok, and removing
content before the image in the FileWithoutImage.odt fixes the issue.

The only specificity I can think of about this file: it uses conditional
paragraphs and sections using variables defined in the very first frame (the
blue one on top of the document). The content of the frame is hidden: display
non printable characters to access it.

Thank you for your attention on this matter.

Erratum: the last sentence in §3 above should read:
You can easily cause the problem in the *FileWithImage.odt*, just by
right-clicking on the image and changing the anchor to "as character" and
regenerate the pdf file.

I opened the files with AOO 4.1.1 on Ubuntu 64bit.

I can't see any difference between the two documents.

BUT: If I open the files and scroll to chapter 2.1.1 or 2.1.2 and do nothing
further (click outside AOO), the document changes (periodically?) after a few
seconds the view and jumps to another page and again backwards. Again and
again.

@orw: Can you please have a look on it?

I also investigate the bug mentioned by "mroe"

bug: Periodic shift in the view of the document when not actively being used

Steps performed to replicate it:
1. Open the document on Writer (FileWithImage.odt)
2. Scroll to Section 2.1.1
3. Select outside of OO Writer (make sure you can see Writer)

We will see periodic scrolls in the view of the document, mainly upwards by 2
pages. I was able to see this as well, and it was not only present in sections
2.1.1 but also in section 1.5. I think this is an inherent instability issue of
Writer and a plausible bug.

So I tried replicating the bugs shown here.
System Configuration:

Windows 8.1 Pro
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1
AOO411m6(Build:9775) - Rev. 1617669

Bug 1: Image replaced by empty white placeholder when anchoring position set to
"as character"

Steps performed:
1. Open FileWithImage.odt, scroll to figure 16
2. Select the figure
3. right click it
4. Select anchor option from the list - and observe it to be set to "To Page"
5. Then open the FIleWithImage.pdf, scroll to page 14, and observe the picture
to be present there

6. Open FileWithoutImage.odt, scroll to figure 16
7. Select the figure
8. right click it
9. Select anchor option from the list - and observe it to be set to "As
Character"
10. Then open the FIleWithoutImage.pdf, scroll to page 14, and observe the
picture to be absent there

I did the above steps and I found the error was present. To test it on my own I
did the following steps:

1. Open FileWithImage.odt, scroll to figure 16
2. Select the figure
3. right click it
4. Select anchor option from the list - and manually set it to "As Character"
5. Generate the pdf file for it - Select file from menu bar -> export to pdf
5. Then open the open the generated pdf, scroll to page 14, and observe the
picture to be present there

So I was successfully able to replicate the bug.
I further extended this same test to other anchoring options that are ToPage,
ToCharacter, and ToFrame. Non of these anchoring positions showed this error. I
would definitely like to mention the idea that in ToPage, the image shifted to
a new page, and I think this is just how the ToPage anchoring works and it is
not a bug.

I also created a document "TestDocument.odt" to test the similar anomaly. I did
the steps mentioned above, but I could not replicate it on the document created
by me. From this I assume that this error occurs only under certain conditions
which might be a particular file size or font used. It could be anything. I was
able to replicate the bugs on the files provided by Alain Baudhuin but not on
the files that I created.
The files created by me are attached here. Other files are too big to be
attached and they can be found at:

Bug status: Can be replicated on the given file

If you are experiencing a page layout unstability, then this problem might have
the same root cause as issue 125600
