Does the HTTP HTTPClient Sampler (Alpha) behave in the same way, or is it just 
the original HTTP Sampler?

The original HTTP Sampler uses the underlying Java code, which gives no direct 
control over connection re-use - this was one of the reasons for trying the 
new HTTPClient code.

If you don't use keep-alive, does the server close the connections OK?
