I am able to reproduce this issue on Mac OS X 10.7.5 with OpenOffice 4.1.1. 

(1) Open sample presentation attached.
(2) Place cursor at the end of a line of text on the blue background.
(3) Type a space. The expected behavior is for the background to remain blue.
It turns white.
