[DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache Flex SDK Installer 3.0 - RC4
This is the discussion thread.
This RC should only have small changes to the
Notice files and an update to the -app.xml files for AntOnAIR.mxml and the
installer to set the min AIR version to 4.0.
If you want to carryover your vote, that's fine.

Alexander, I had exactly the same thoughts on the installer UI usability.

Objet : Re: [DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache Flex SDK Installer 3.0 - RC4
Hi,
I just tried Apache Flex SDK 4.12 RC4 + AIR SDK 13 beta + Flash Player
13 beta using Apache Flex Installer 3.0.0 RC3 on Windows 7 for IntelliJ IDEA.
Quick testing revealed only one strange thing: osmf.swc file in [Flex SDK]/frameworks/libs that was named in lowercase for ages is now called in uppercase: OSMF.swc. Is is something controlled by Apache and is this an intended change?
Also I have some comments regarding Apache Flex SDK usability. These are not blocking issues, just a subjective feedback of a 'real user'.
1. It is hard to guess how to enable Dev Builds. I wanted to play with
4.12 yesterday but failed to find the option. I just thought that I downloaded some wrong installer that is able to install official releases only. It took me a day to find a hint about context menu somewhere in this mailing list. In my opinion all options available in context popup should be better discoverable. For example there could be a link 'Advanced options' in the bottom-left corner (line where where 'Next' button is located).
2. I expect to see check marks on the popup menu showing current status of 'Show Dev Builds' and 'Enable Verbose Logging' options. At the moment there is no way to disable 'Show Dev Builds' (though check mark on the popup menu is not shown) and also no way to find out if verbose logging is enabled or not.
3. 'Configure Download Cache' option should have '...' at the end as it opens a dialog.
4. Popup with these options remains available even after pressing 'Next'
button, when it is not actual any more.
5. Cosmetics: 'Select' word is repeated 4 times, though it is not needed for understandability. I think is is enough to have it in the header:
'Select AIR and Flash Player version'. (By the say why not 'Select Flex, AIR and Flash Player versions'?) Labels for combos can be more concise and with colons at the end Flex version:
AIR version:
Flash Player version:
6. One more minor: it is hard to find out the Installer version. It is shown by Windows uninstall manager and in installations logs: 3.0.0, no hint whether it is RC2 or RC3 or just any revision info. May be header should show installer version in addition to dynamically changing Flex SDK version. May be header should show only installer version as Flex version is shown in enormous size in the center of the dialog. Third option is 'About' link somewhere: either on the dialog itself or in the context menu.
Feel free to ignore my opinion,
Alexander

The swfobject url works fine from my browser. So definitely no firewall
issue here.
Although, from Fiddler, I see that the responses are getting a 304 (Not
Modified) response. That tells me that probably some bad version of the
zip file is in Adobe AIR cache.
Will try again after clearing that cache.
Thanks,

According to the help on FileStream.writeBytes() , it says I could trigger IOErrorEvent if the file cannot be written.
http://help.adobe.com/fr_FR/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/filesystem/FileStream.html#writeBytes()
So maybe we could add:
fs.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, ioErrorEventHandler);
when writing to file.
WDYT?

The installer could certainly use more error handling code. But really, I've seen AIR SDKs fail to download properly more than once. I can't reproduce it in a way to get any serious analysis of whether it is the installer or the Adobe download server.

In fact, the call is synchronous (and blocking) so no event can be sent during the writing.
I have also tried opening the file while it was written, no effect.
So it's not worth adding the error handling.

We can try that.
I was able to reproduce Om's problem. You have to start truly fresh by deleting the shared object that stores the cache preferences (or probably by setting the cache folder to an invalid path).
That's probably worth an RC5.
Regarding the jumping of the screen, that repositioning code has been there for a while, at least in 2.7. It may be more noticeable now that we have to load strings from the server instead of them being hard-coded into the app.
So, if we're going to do an RC5, what do we want to do about the jumping:
1) nothing
2) don't show any window at all (visible=false) until the strings are in and the window is position. This could make start up seem slower.
3) don't reposition the window.
4) other ideas?

MD5 for the path is not a good idea. As you said, it makes it difficult to find and remove files.
So escaping and warning about the limit is fine.

Hmm. Truncation could result in accidental cache collisions. There is already MD5 code in the app, maybe the safest thing to do is to generate an MD5 of the path/url. That would have the downside that it would be hard to go find and remove an individual file from the cache, which would be convenient for testing and also if a bad file gets in the cache.
I think maybe the easiest path is to just escape and tell folks there is a
256 char limit (after escaping). If folks need to use a longer URL, they'll have to use a URL shortener or not turn on the cache.
Thoughts?

It works, and I don't have to add apache mirror handling code to the ant
script. I can do it, it just isn't a high priority right now. Maybe if
we start seeing serious download numbers of FlexJS we'll have to revisit,
but maybe by then we'll have some other solution other than pulling down
the latest SDK (like a separate package or hopefully, Falcon is ready).
Keep in mind that the Falcon build is locked to specific versions of
Apache commons. We don't pull the latest there so we are also hitting
archive.a.o for those jars as well. I would think archive.a.o already
gets hit a lot by other download scripts from other projects. There is
risk to having your product automatically use the latest, although I
noticed we are for Google Closure.

Isnt it just a swap of the url in the config file to switch to 4.12 when it
releases? Or is the plan to stick to 4.11 (via archive url) for a while?
What is the point in sticking to 4.11?

That doesn't make sense to me. We just pushed 4.12. When we announce it
we have to pull 4.11 of the mirrors.

Of course, this is the best option. But, I think for now, we can simply
switch the 4.11 download to point to the mirror url.

Good question. So far, I've only tested against 4.11 which will disappear
from the mirrors shortly.
We're pulling other jars from archives because we don't automatically
download "latests". I sort of assumed that archive can handle that sort
of load.
Another option is to create some sort of MXMLC release package like we did
for pixel bender so that can stay on the mirrors.
And of course, the perfect option is to get Falcon up to snuff so we don't
need the SDK download at all.
Thoughts?

I am continuing to test RC5. The Flex SDK now installs properly.
A question about FlexJS installation: As part of the installation, Apache
Flex SDK 4.11.0 is downloaded, but from
http://archive.apache.org/dist/flex/4.11.0/binaries/apache-flex-sdk-4.11.0-bin.zip.
I don't think this is a good idea. It will put unnecessary load on the
Apache servers. Cant we just load it from the mirrors like usual?
Thanks,

Thoughts?

Re: [DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache Flex SDK Installer 3.0 - RC4
Posted by Alex Harui <ah...@adobe.com>.
Hmm. Truncation could result in accidental cache collisions. There is
already MD5 code in the app, maybe the safest thing to do is to generate
an MD5 of the path/url. That would have the downside that it would be
hard to go find and remove an individual file from the cache, which would
be convenient for testing and also if a bad file gets in the cache.
I think maybe the easiest path is to just escape and tell folks there is a
256 char limit (after escaping). If folks need to use a longer URL,
they'll have to use a URL shortener or not turn on the cache.
Thoughts?

Ah, ok so the native path has the "?" in it.
>I guess I could escape everything including the slashes, then there wouldn't be subdirectories. That might be easier than other possible solutions.
Windows Doc says file paths are limited to 256 chars on Windows 7.
File names seem to have the same limit.
So that might be a good solution, and probably easier to browse, than nested subdirectories that are currently created.
Since the path is used for identification of the file, you could also truncate to the last 200 chars (in case it's too long, when appended to the cache dir path)
as the last chars are usually the most significant.

We are not escaping the segments of the URL path expression. What you are
seeing in the log is the File.url not File.nativepath.
I guess I could escape everything including the slashes, then there
wouldn't be subdirectories. That might be easier than other possible
solutions.

Alex, I suspected that too, so I tried to manually create a directory named:
remotecontent%3ffilepath%3dcom
And it was successfully created.
However, creating remotecontent?filepath.com fails (? Is not allowed).
Are you unescaping the file name before creating ?

Yeah, looks like it can't create the file name because on windows it has illegal chars. Thanks for catching that. Looks like it is time for RC6!

Yeah, looks like it can't create the file name because on windows it has
illegal chars. Thanks for catching that. Looks like it is time for RC6!

Did the same test, with caching enabled, and verbose log enabled at startup.
frozen at the same step (guava) : the busy indicator is running, but nothing happens, even after 5 min.
I have updated the log file at the same DP url.
FYI no directory starting with remotecontent... is created under flex_installer_cache (there are other directories such as air, dist, download files, flex, etc...).

Caching was on the first tests (failing)=
Caching was off on the last tests (success).
It's possible I turned verbose logging after the download started.
Do you want me to try again, with caching, and setting verbose logging immediately?

I have tried Installer 3.0 RC4 with FlexJS Nightly / AIR 3.9 :
I have used directories without spaces, including for download cache:
SDK target: D:\ApacheFlex\FlexJS\SDK
Installer cache: D:\Temp\flex_installer_cache Windows 7, fr
Installer stops at guava downloading step (9th square) !!
Tried 3 times, always stops at the same step.
Downloading guava directly from the browser works fine:
http://search.maven.org/remotecontent?filepath=com/google/guava/guava/15.0/guava-15.0.jar
Here is the verbose install log:

How about just a busy indicator then while it's loading. It doesn't require a language and is a universal graphic.

Interesting idea, but that will be in English since we are waiting to load
the default localized strings. Maybe I'll look into putting up a busy

It appears blank initially anyways before the jump. At least if we center
it right away, there wont be a jump. I think having it blank for a few
seconds is okay.
Maybe would could have all the dropdowns show a default label of
"Loading..." so that it does not appear blank.

Installer Cache is not enabled by default so anyone running an install
first time the use 3.0 and if they don't enable the cache they'll hit this
error, so good catch.

Re: [DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache Flex SDK Installer 3.0 - RC4

We can try that.
I was able to reproduce Om's problem. You have to start truly fresh by
deleting the shared object that stores the cache preferences (or probably
by setting the cache folder to an invalid path).
That's probably worth an RC5.
Regarding the jumping of the screen, that repositioning code has been
there for a while, at least in 2.7. It may be more noticeable now that we
have to load strings from the server instead of them being hard-coded into
the app.
So, if we're going to do an RC5, what do we want to do about the jumping:
1) nothing
2) don't show any window at all (visible=false) until the strings are in
and the window is position. This could make start up seem slower.
3) don't reposition the window.
4) other ideas?

According to the help on FileStream.writeBytes() , it says I could trigger IOErrorEvent if the file cannot be written.
http://help.adobe.com/fr_FR/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/filesystem/FileStream.html#writeBytes()
So maybe we could add:
fs.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, ioErrorEventHandler); when writing to file.

RE: [DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache Flex SDK Installer 3.0 - RC4
Posted by Maurice Amsellem <ma...@systar.com>.
On second try, the installation went well (SDK 4.11 / AIR 13beta / FP 13).
So maybe what could have happened is that I was browsing the cache directories and files while the installation was in progress
and maybe that locked the air_sdk zip file while it was being writing to disk.
Is that possible?
In that case the installation should have raised an error (eg. locked file) instead of being stuck?

Om, can you try installing using ant install script, to see it's the installer code, or maybe a firewall setting or something.

Hi,
Think that URL should have "http://sourceforge.net/projects/" on the front of it? Unless that added by the code?
I checked my Installer cache I do have OSMF.swc in there so it must of downloaded the correct 2.0 one somehow.
The jump to centre of screen is a little annoying, but I find the progress bar jumping up and down more so.
Thanks,
Justin

I guess in the future we should remember to remind people in the vote or
discussion thread to right-click. Having an "Advanced Options" sort of
invites folks to look there, so I wouldn't want to do that. Having some
sort of "Developers-Only" might be ok. Either way, changing the main
screen is more than I want to do since I have zero design skills. I think
we should ship Installer 3.0 RC4 and someone else is welcome to add these
usability suggestions to the next version. I think all of the other
suggestions are good. I'd be 80% sure we'll find some bug in the
ant_on_air code since that's pretty new and there will be one more
installer release, or maybe folks will contribute new languages or fill in
some missing strings in the existing languages.

You have to search in the dev list for this info. Not easy.

The OSMF team decided to change the name to all upper case for the new
version and I dint see a rain to change it when I originally added support
for OSMF 2.0.

Sorry, just realized that it is correct that osmf.swc is available in

IntelliJ IDEA has some hardcoded knowledge about SWC names. It always
includes unknown SWCs in the build path, so uppercased OSMF.swc now
becomes available in pure ActionScript projects what is not ideal. I can
fix it for sure, though common style in all SWC names is just nice to
have. May be Linux users will have some issues as file system is case

I'm not going to argue, though stay with my opinion: easily discoverable
option will increase the number of testers before the release. I don't
think 'Advanced options' link pollutes UI much. It takes less space than
3 'select' words that can be safely removed :)

I don't think this worth delaying, just 'nice to have' somewhen.
Somewhen you'll have to ask user what installer version he has and as of
now will have to explain where to see it.

Not intended. We can change it. What breaks if it doesn't get changed?

In theory, only followers of the dev list should know how view the dev
builds, so making a button on the main screen doesn't seem right.

Everything on the right click menu is for developers so I didn't spend a
lot of time making look great and the strings are not localizable. I'm
not sure it is worth the effort. What do other folks think?

Sounds like a bug.

Could be. What do others think?

Adding an about popup requires the proper design of the dialog and
localization of any strings. Do folks want to take that on? Should we
delay releasing the installer until then?

Hi,
I just tried Apache Flex SDK 4.12 RC4 + AIR SDK 13 beta + Flash Player
13 beta using Apache Flex Installer 3.0.0 RC3 on Windows 7 for IntelliJ
IDEA.
Quick testing revealed only one strange thing: osmf.swc file in [Flex
SDK]/frameworks/libs that was named in lowercase for ages is now called
in uppercase: OSMF.swc. Is is something controlled by Apache and is this
an intended change?
Also I have some comments regarding Apache Flex SDK usability. These are
not blocking issues, just a subjective feedback of a 'real user'.
1. It is hard to guess how to enable Dev Builds. I wanted to play with
4.12 yesterday but failed to find the option. I just thought that I
downloaded some wrong installer that is able to install official
releases only. It took me a day to find a hint about context menu
somewhere in this mailing list. In my opinion all options available in
context popup should be better discoverable. For example there could be
a link 'Advanced options' in the bottom-left corner (line where where
'Next' button is located).
2. I expect to see check marks on the popup menu showing current status
of 'Show Dev Builds' and 'Enable Verbose Logging' options. At the moment
there is no way to disable 'Show Dev Builds' (though check mark on the
popup menu is not shown) and also no way to find out if verbose logging
is enabled or not.
3. 'Configure Download Cache' option should have '...' at the end as it
opens a dialog.
4. Popup with these options remains available even after pressing 'Next'
button, when it is not actual any more.
5. Cosmetics: 'Select' word is repeated 4 times, though it is not needed
for understandability. I think is is enough to have it in the header:
'Select AIR and Flash Player version'. (By the say why not 'Select Flex,
AIR and Flash Player versions'?) Labels for combos can be more concise
and with colons at the end
Flex version:
AIR version:
Flash Player version:
6. One more minor: it is hard to find out the Installer version. It is
shown by Windows uninstall manager and in installations logs: 3.0.0, no
hint whether it is RC2 or RC3 or just any revision info. May be header
should show installer version in addition to dynamically changing Flex
SDK version. May be header should show only installer version as Flex
version is shown in enormous size in the center of the dialog. Third
option is 'About' link somewhere: either on the dialog itself or in the
context menu.
Feel free to ignore my opinion,
Alexander
