Binary artifacts (was: [VOTE] Release Apache VXQuery Incubating 0.2)

Hi Jochen,

Binary, source, and java doc jars for the sub projects are available in the repository. But I think that those are only convenience artifacts and that we need to vote on the sources.

Is that right?

Thanks,
Till

We do have 3 binding votes so far from:

Jochen Wiedmann
Cezar Andrei
Vinayak Borkar

I think we should be able to move to the next step of getting the IPMC
votes.

Re: Binary artifacts (was: [VOTE] Release Apache VXQuery Incubating 0.2)

Posted by Till <ti...@westmann.org>.
We can certainly discuss both points.

For the binary release I think that it would make a lot more sense for the next
release, as we'll have better support to distribute to different machines. For
the version that we just voted on, this is still completely manual.

For the format of the archives I shifted from "as many as possible" (for the
first RC) to "just one" because it seemed wasteful to deal with many formats as
long as we don't have the right content. If we get this release out (and have
the right content) we can certainly go back to more archive formats.

Re: Binary artifacts (was: [VOTE] Release Apache VXQuery Incubating 0.2)

Posted by Jochen Wiedmann <jo...@gmail.com>.
Very well, so we can at least feed the maven repositories.I'd personally
still be in favour for a classical binary distribution (if for no other
reason than to discuss the format: zip, tar.gz, 7z, ....., but we can do
that on the source archive, if anyone desires.), but getetting out the
first release is top priority. So, let's go on.

I didn't count. Do we have the 3 binding votes?

Re: Binary artifacts (was: [VOTE] Release Apache VXQuery Incubating 0.2)

Posted by Till Westmann <ti...@westmann.org>.
Hi Jochen,

as I tried to say in my first sentence, binary artifacts are available.
However, as we have 3 subprojects that each produce a jar, they are in a different directory in the repository.
E.g. for vxquery-core they are in
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachevxquery-128/org/apache/vxquery/apache-vxquery-core/0.2-incubating/
In this directory we have the binary jar (and the source and javadoc jars) and it contains a LICENSE and NOTICE in the META-INF folder.

Re: Binary artifacts (was: [VOTE] Release Apache VXQuery Incubating 0.2)

Posted by Jochen Wiedmann <jo...@gmail.com>.
Source artifacts are essential. However, I am unaware of *any* project that
doesn't provide one or more binary artifacts. And, if you are publishing
binary artifacts at all, they are also subject to certain standards like
containing LICENSE and NOTICE files. I wouldn't make any bets that you
could (after a lot of discussions) can get approval for a binary-only
release that simply references an SVN tag, or the like, but that's not your
question, I assume?

So, it is standard practice, and by far the esaiest (in particular for the
users, for which we are targeting finally) way to go, to consider them as
an important part of the release.

Jochen
