When the project started there was a single "README.md" which does not scale well. Had a look at the following alternatives

* FreeMarker's existing documentation system
* JBake (which uses FreeMarker)
* Maven site

Decided to use Maven site approach since it comes out of the box and the hard part is the actual content anyway
