[VOTE] Cayenne 3.1 beta 1

I just cloned trunk to STABLE-3.1 branch. Trunk is now the future 3.2 release.

A 3.1 beta was assembled and can be found at [1] in its Maven form and at [2] as source and binary assemblies. Please evaluate the release and cast your votes.

Thanks,
Andrus

Adding my +1 and closing the vote. The vote has passed - congratulations, we have a beta! :)

I will deploy the distribution, and once that's done, we can start with announcements.

I think the changes are incorrectly shown under M4 (M4 was renamed to B1, but we forgot to rename it in RELEASE-NOTES). IMO it is not a show stopper, but we'll fix it before B2.

Yeah, I used B1, as milestones were called M1,M2,M3... So kept it capitalized.

I'm +1. The only issues I've seen are that the RELEASE NOTES file is missing the list of changes for b1, and the release is B1 rather than b1. I'm hoping that the case difference will not confuse maven (which can get easily confused sometimes).

Oracle has reorganized the URL structure and never
bothered to put redirects in place.
I'm not sure which of several inflector attempts this
refers to. I did find a dev.java.net-related project
on Jarvana though:

http://www.jarvana.com/jarvana/browse/net/java/dev/inflector/inflector/0.7.0/?by=&order=&d=y

On a tangent, if that inflector serves to pluralize
messages: Be aware that this makes translating much
harder (and probably impossible).
If i18n is ever to become an issue, you'll want to
switch to GNU gettext. Full details on pluralization
in i18n are on
http://www.gnu.org/savannah-checkouts/gnu/gettext/manual/html_node/Plural-forms.html
Includes stuff you never wanted to know :-)

That's now an Apache project. I fixed that reference.

Who knows what has happened to the java.net projects? Jenkins (nee Hudson) left when it was all falling apart and I haven't seen any improvement since.

+1 with caveats:

Some sites listed in the NOTICE.txt could not be found:

http://objectstyle.org/ashwood/

http://www.ognl.org/

https://inflector.dev.java.net/

Ashwood is missing (should it point to the GitHub repository now?) and I
was getting connection timeouts for OGNL/Inflector, so they might be having
server issues.

Also, in BaseContext.java, deleteObject() is still deprecated. I thought
we had decided to keep it around at one point?

I'm hitting an exception executing a particular EJBQL query. It's a fairly basic query, and I only hit the problem with EJBQL; I can execute the equivalent query via a SelectQuery and it's fine. I don't have time right now to post the map, etc. But I wanted to mention it. I don't think it needs to hold up a b1 release; we can address whatever the underlying issue is in a subsequent release. I should point out: the query worked awhile ago. I'll try to track down the revision where it broke.

Yes, but there's always one more issue to resolve.
And while you resolve one, two others are being entered.

So the real task is not getting all issues closed.
Projects instead triage issues for the next release. And I think all projects (not just the ASF ones) do it that way, either explicitly or implicitly.

Just like with any project, the goal is to ship the best product possible, but in some reasonable time. So these 2 have to be balanced. FWIW I have a very long list of things I want to see in Cayenne, and would prefer a permanent Alpha, but we have to ship stable releases occasionally :) So now that we cloned the Beta to a separate branch (and if the release vote passes), all bug fixes will be applied to trunk and that stable branch, all other changes that have a potential to destabilize the API or the framework will go on trunk. So the final release stays with a fixed feature set, but becomes more and more "stable" as we fix the the bugs. All the new stuff goes to trunk.

Awesome! Thanks for taking time to review the existing docs (yes, we still need to write a lot of those, something I hoped to accomplish while in beta). With this patch I guess I can manually fix the typos, so what you sent us is everything we need. Going forward I'd appreciate if you could open a Jira and attach patches to it. There is a little thing to check when you submit a patch explicitly authorizing ASF to use your contribution. Just a formality, but makes it easier for us to include the contribution in Cayenne.

Thanks again,
Andrus

Hi,

Just a curious final user here - waiting this release - , but shouldn't it
be interesting to close/resolve as much issues as we can before a
release?[1]
Maybe, I'm not seen the big picture or don't understand how ASF project is
managed!

Other thing, I've started reading the docbook (well, where there is
something written! rs rs) and found some typos - setup.xml and
including-cayenne-in-project.xml [2]. I hope to help more with docs now. I'm
finally using the Cayenne in a real project.

I guess no progress has been made on the tests. I'd suggest the same thing - proceed with 3.1 Beta, and work on this in parallel.

Re: [VOTE] Cayenne 3.1 beta 1

Also, where are we with https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CAY-1210? I ask because we have code in there, but as yet no functional tests for the new code.

I think this should be fixed before 3.1, but I'm happy leaving it until after the beta. People are unlikely to trip over this since there is no documented API yet.

I would push it to 3.2. Exactly because I don't feel the issue is completely solved here.

Re: [VOTE] Cayenne 3.1 beta 1

Should we include this in 3.1?

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CAY-1622

Also, unless I'm mistaken, the attached patch will still leave
compilation warnings in the subclass, since only the superclass will
get a newly generated serial number. I think I'd be more inclined to
put @SuppressWarnings("serial") on both the subclass and superclass.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Hmm.. we didn't in the previous build on the same day:

https://builds.apache.org/job/Cayenne-trunk/716/

and the change was kind of irrelevant to the build:

https://fisheye6.atlassian.com/changelog/cayenne/?cs=1343404

I've disabled the ci tests just now (since clearly we aren't quite ready for that), but we do have test failures also in Java 7:

    https://builds.apache.org/job/Cayenne-trunk/

java.sql.SQLException: Attempt to insert null into a non-nullable column in statement [ALTER TABLE PAINTING ALTER COLUMN NEWCOL2 SET NOT NULL]
	at org.hsqldb.jdbc.Util.sqlException(Unknown Source)
	at org.hsqldb.jdbc.jdbcStatement.fetchResult(Unknown Source)
	at org.hsqldb.jdbc.jdbcStatement.execute(Unknown Source)
	at org.apache.cayenne.merge.AbstractToDbToken.executeSql(AbstractToDbToken.java:57)
	at org.apache.cayenne.merge.AbstractToDbToken.execute(AbstractToDbToken.java:45)
	at org.apache.cayenne.merge.MergeCase.execute(MergeCase.java:131)
	at org.apache.cayenne.merge.MergeCase.assertTokensAndExecute(MergeCase.java:188)
	at org.apache.cayenne.merge.SetAllowNullToDbTest.test(SetAllowNullToDbTest.java:43)

Is this a real test failure?
