access log contains scrambled text when using Coyote JK 2 connector

Summary: access log contains scrambled text when using Coyote JK
                    2 connector
           Product: Tomcat 4
           Version: 4.1.7
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows XP
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: Other
         Component: Connector:Coyote JK 2
        AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org
        ReportedBy: brehmer@cbsweb.net

I have set up Tomcat 4.1.7 with both HTTP/1.1 and Coyote JK 2 connectors.
Further I'm using Apache 2.0.39 with mod_jk2. httpd and Tomcat are running on
the same machine under Windows XP.

When accessing tomcat directly everything works fine. Accessing the same webapp
via Apache/mod_jk2 the Tomcat access log entries contain scrambled text like this:

<$k - - [17/Jul/2002:15:28:49 1000] "GET _R?@-Wqu??y/??G+ HTTP/1.1" 200 10772
HTML 4.01 - - [17/Jul/2002:15:28:52 1000] "GET ML PUBLIC "-//W3C//D?tr>

Client IP and request URL are effected.
