[users@httpd] Problem stopping service on Windows 2000

For some reason I cannot stop the Apache2 (version 2.0.48) service, running under Windows 2000. Whether I try with the Apache Monitor program, or straight from the "Services" window, the service gets stuck in "Stopping" status. After a few minutes the computer reboots by itself.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or want more information?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I had an earlier version of Apache (2.0.45) until just the other day, and it
ran fine (although I don't use it much, it was just for testing web designs
and PHP scripts when I happened to be messing with them at home).

Anyway, this one starts fine after the reboot, except that I am afraid to
stop it :) Below is my error.log:

Stephen, I've been running Apache/2.0.47 (Win32) PHP/4.3.2 on Win XP home
sp1 for over half a year now. I don't know that I ever stopped it, short of
rebooting the machine but restarts have always worked and in general have
had no issues with this software running as a server on this box.

Now I've started it up again, happened in like a split second. Confirmed on
a browser on the same box. My error log shows

[Wed Mar 03 12:11:55 2004] [notice] Parent: Received shutdown signal --
Shutting down the server.
[Wed Mar 03 12:11:55 2004] [notice] Child 1724: Exit event signaled. Child

I know xp and 2k aren't quite the same thing but when you say stopping
causes a reboot I wonder if you have a much bigger problem, like a blown
registry or win config files. Can you post back with the contents of the
error log after rebooting, showing the shutdown and startup after the reboot?

Also, how long have you had apache installed, has it always had this
problem, and how long since you've installed the os on that machine?
