VOTE: change package name for Axiom

I'd like to suggest that we change the Axiom package name to
	org.apache.axiom.*.

The reason for this is that Axiom is a thing of its own - the fact that
the code originated from the WS Commons project is of no interest or
concern to Axiom users. Axiom users may be within WS (such as Axis2) or
elsewhere (potentially Coccoon). Do they need to know that this
beautiful system came from WS? :-) Not really. As such, we are better
off with the simple package names to make the user experience easier.

I'd like to do this before 1.0.

Here's my vote: +1.

Sanjiva.
p.s.: I'm going to make similar proposals for the other Commons
projects!

we need axiom soap stuff in api jar or move it to axis2 back. we
discussed where it should be and decided axiom handle it. Axis2 must
not have a compiler dependancy axiom impl jar

+1 org.apache.axiom.*

Just one word of coution, it is good idea to sit down and decide on
package refactoring and then stick to it. It is not nice that user's
code break or they have to recode gen every other week. (rememeber we
did axiom refactoring last week)

this was my old comment :)
Thanks

We have a choice ... keep it in axiom-impl or create axiom-soap also.
I'm personally ok with keeping it in axiom-impl (and axiom-dom
similarly).

One more thing to draw attention.

AXIOM has a layer specific to SOAP. Is it ok we keep this in axiom-api
and axiom-impl ?

You're correct. I actually meant Jakarta commons as that seems like the
dominant commons area (based on the number of projects) at Apache.

There's no "Apache commons" project .. that's sort of dead
(commons.apache.org) and just yesterday I made a proposal to the Jakarta
PMC to try to get commons.apache.org to become a virtual TLP for
*.apache.org/commons.

Moving from WS to XML is unnecessary .. the XML project does not have a
veto on all things XML. Moving is a bit problematic because of commit
privs as well; then we'd all need commit privs there as well. That's
easy to do but maybe not sensible to give a lot of WS committers full
commit access to the XML tree.

Sanjiva.

In this spirit, does anyone else think there would be value in moving
these projects to the XML project or to Apache commons? A move like this
may provide more exposure for these projects as they will be visible where
users will naturally look for them. Does this kind of lateral movement
occur among Apache projects?

There's absolutely no such ASF convention. Its up to us to decide what
we want to do. There are projects that do it both ways.

My reasoning is as follows: Look at it from an Axiom user's point of
view. Does (s)he need to know that Axiom originated in WS land? No,
absolutely not. All (s)he needs to know that its an XML Infoset
representation with XOP built into it. (No, that's not WS specific

Let's please not get territorial about this stuff .. we don't gain
anything by claiming "ownership" with a ".ws" in the package name. Just
look at it from the user's view. Apache Axiom works just fine and is
perfect to make clear to users what it actually is.

I'm going to argue the same for XML Schema .. that has nothing to do
with WS either.

WS-Policy OTOH does. However, I'm planning on proposing a name for it (I
have one in mind but I'll hold it for now) and suggesting calling it
"Apache XXX."

Sanjiva.

Hi,
I'm also +1 in the change since Axiom is an XML object model just like
JDOM. However I wonder whether Apache has a convention of having the
top level project name in the packaging, say "ws" in this case ?
