[~jingzhang] You can reproduce this issue by setting 

IN_SUB_QUERY_THRESHOLD = 0. The unit case in SqlToRelConverterTest like [https://github.com/apache/calcite/blob/master/core/src/test/java/org/apache/calcite/test/SqlToRelConverterTest.java#L3563] and in sub-query.iq by 
{noformat}
!set insubquerythreshold 0{noformat}
