I don't have enough software architect experience by a long shot to have much
of a better idea how to solve this issue, unfortunately - and the thread does
discuss most of those ideas and why you might not(!) want to do those in
particular.

So I understand if that's too vague to work with.

Originally I opened this request because the lock files were causing colleagues
quite a few headaches when trying to share files and it seemed like something
to report as improvable. The issue described at the start of the linked thread
was actually the bigger one we had to deal with on network shares.

But that's four years ago now and I've (regrettably) not actually used
openOffice.org in a long time, so I have no great investment in the topic any
more. I don't know if you'd have resources to give the topic a rethink - and
can totally understand if you don't.
