Does Xalan always build its own DOM when processing XPath?

I wonder if Xalan's XPath implementation makes use of
an already-built input DOM tree, or if it always has
to build its own DOM using the org.apache.xalan.stree
classes. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can
shed some light on this. Thanks a lot!
