DO NOT REPLY [Bug 52060] New: PDF/X-3:2002 should go with PDF
Version 1.3
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=52060
Bug #: 52060
Summary: PDF/X-3:2002 should go with PDF Version 1.3
Product: Fop
Version: 1.1dev
Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: pdf

PDF/X-3:2002 should go with PDF Version 1.3
Wouldn't it be cool if you can print a real book with Apache FOP?
Apache FOP is a great tool for creating pdf documents from xml.
Thx for all your effort you put into the development of this tool.
To be able to print the pdf to a real book with
http://www.blurb.com/make/pdf_to_book
we need a PDF/X-3:2002 in PDF Version 1.3, because PDF Version 1.4 is not
accepted.
Q: Is there a possibility to produce a PDF "1.3" Version for PDF/X-3:2002 with
some setting?
Currently i try to generate a pdf for printing at blurb
(http://www.blurb.com/make/pdf_to_book).
When uploading the generated pdf to blub i get the follwing message:
"The PDF you selected is not in PDF/X-3:2002 format or PDF 1.3 compatible. You
should use the PDF/X-3:2002 format set with Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) compatibility
for correct printing with Blurbs network. Please revise your PDF and try
again."
The pdf is not accepted because it is the Version 1.4.
I've also checked the PDF with the Preflight of "Adobe Acrobat X",
witch also is complaining that the PDF/X-3:2002 should go with Version 1.3.
Preflight Summary-Report: "Error: PDF-Version is newer than 1.3."
Q: I've seen on the enhancement list that it is planned to have a parameter in
FOP
(config, or so) to change the Version. Is there some idea when this may be?
Thx a lot in advance,
Willi

Why so negative? FOP does support PDF/X-3:2003 (based on PDF 1.4) to a certain
degree. A successor to the spec you're after. There are lots of others PDF/X
specs by now. It has even become a forest of choices. It's difficult to support
them all. Since FOP is open source you could even help us retrofit PDF 1.3 but
given PDF 1.3's age, that doesn't really make sense.

Thx a lot for your clear answer.
Without the Version 1.3 it will never be PDF/X-3:2002 complient (according to
Acrobat Preflight) and therefore not suitable for usage in a professional
printing process ;-(

Will Version 1.3 be supported?

The situation is a little more nuanced than that. There maybe something I'm
missing, but as far as I know the simplest answer is no, it's not possible to
create a PDF whose version is < 1.3. Why? Because FOP hasn't been designed to
be able to control the PDF version of the output. As such, there is too much
that is hard-coded to be able to produce PDF versions < 1.4 without a
significant effort in development.
However, producing pdfs > 1.4 is easy, simply because they're all backwards
compatible. As such, all PDF versions 1.4 are also valid as PDF 1.5, 1.6 and
1.7. So in order to create greater PDF versions all I had to do was change a
version header.
Hope that helps
