How to implement custom Privilege

In a previous message titled "Custom privileges using jsr-283 developer
preview," it was stated that it was not possible to register a custom
privilege.  Is that still true in the latest Jackrabbit 2.x line?  How
is the equivalent accomplished in Jackrabbit 1.x?  All I need is for the
privilege to be stored and read back.  It does not need to be
interpreted by Jackrabbit.  Thanks for any help.
