Release train !

Hi!

I intend to cut a release for the Apache LDAP API and Apache Directory
Server.

LDAP API release is pretty much ready, with many fixes, so as soon as
the 4h grace period for the project pom release is gone, I'll prepare
the release.

The next step will be to prepare a release for Apache Directory Server,
which will take a bit more time (may be next week?)

Then once done, I intend to go for a Studio release, which is very much
needed...

Thanks!

No strong opinion, but I think we could go for a 2.0.0.

Very much appreciated! Will that finally be a v2.0.0 or yet another milestone?

Update, was: Release train !

Hi!

just to keep you updated: I have completed my LDAP API javadoc fixing
(more than 1000 warnings...), and I intend to cut a release ASAP.

That would complete the first step of this release train.

That will be the first step

Thanks for the feedback Frederik!

Hopefully, I have a M3, my old (but solid) Mac BookPro just died in my
hands last year. It was 6 years old, I suspect a soldering issue but it
does not worth it to have it fix, the ARM based mac are so much better...

FYI, I'm still working on Apache LDAP API, removing the last dependence
on Antlr which will allow us to switch to Java 21, but more important to
cut an LDAP API release. May be in april?

The server will follow, then Studio!

PS: providing Linux ARM binaries was trivial, too. I just added

            <environment>
              <os>linux</os>
              <ws>gtk</ws>
              <arch>aarch64</arch>
            </environment>

to pom.xml, IIRC.

Not much work to *add* ARM binaries, so older Macs will still be able to run the latest versions. I can send a PR if you're interested.

If you want to give it a try or just copy/paste, checkout https://github.com/lhaeger/directory-studio/blob/master/installers/macos/src/dmg/createDMG.sh

The current release of macOS, version 26 "Tahoe", will be the last one
that supports x86, the future will be only ARM, so you might be able to
make the next release of Apache Directory Studio a little simpler by
just replacing x86 binaries with ARM binaries outright (instead of
bothering with providing binaries for two architechtures).

If nothing else, that should make the necessary changes to createDMG.sh
absolutely trivial.

So do I, the macOS ARM version.

I just see that an ARM version for Windows was just added with 4.34, up to 4.33 it was Intel-only on Windows. Since Studio is still using 4.24, I guess a Win ARM version is not as easy to add as for Linux. I just tried adding

            <environment>
              <os>win32</os>
              <ws>win32</ws>
              <arch>aarch64</arch>
            </environment>

to the pom.xml and the build failed, unfortunately. I can reproduce that building for Linux/ARM works as described by Shawn, though.

Just tested my Studio build on Pi. It runs there also, of course. It’s just stripped down Debian Linux (Bookworm).

Hi Fredrick,

This was very helpful - thanks! I added the following to the pom, rebuilt and tested and it worked.

Haven’t tried yet but certain this would also work on Pi (or any other) linux arm64 platform.

Emmanuel, it would be cool if we could get this change into the release train. Happy to submit a PR.

Good question. I think Frederik had already produced a package for M3,
so it should be possible to have something similar for Raspberry pi.

Great news on the release train. One question:

Any chance we can introduce a new Studio package ARM for Linux?

For those of us that develop on Linux VM under an ARM Mac OR works on Rasberry Pi.

we already have 3 different packages:

The last time I built Studio was for verifying the Eclipse 4.24 upgrade
and at that point it all worked fine (which possibly could be helpful to
know now), but that's almost an entire year ago now.

Current master (c04e4d601524af2fba0d0f7c8718c39d04bfc2ba) + https://github.com/apache/directory-studio/pull/83 builds fine for me as-is with JDK17 using ./build.sh. Quite a few errors with JDK21, though, which I did not look into further as I primarily needed an Apple Silicon build. Runs fine with JRE21, just does not build.

For starters, wouldn't it be enough to get the project imported to Eclipse (whatever version it takes) error-free? I would not mind developing on an older version for another while until the issues with updating to current versions (JDK, Eclipse, dependencies) are sorted out.

Re: Release train !

Posted by Emmanuel Lecharny <el...@gmail.com>.
Hi!

This thread has been started 9 months ago, and I didn't intend for it to
last that long...

Anyway, the current news is that Apache LDAP API is ready, so is Apache
Directory Server, and I expect to be able to cut a release in the coming
days.

There are many changes included, the most important is the complete
removal of antlr from the LDAP API, which allows us to build the project
with Java > 11 (the main blocker was the antlr antiquated version we
were using, 2.7.7, that didn't support java 17 and higher).

There are a few things to fix before the release can be done, and that
includes fixing the Jenkins builds as we are using docker images with
Maven 3.8.2 included, while we now require 3.9.

I have also upgraded directory-project with many maven dependencies
updates, and that will be the first release being done.

The other projects will need to refer to directory-project, and I'd like
to bump up as many deps and plugin as possible for them (it's already
the case for ldap api and server).

I'm talking about directory-buildtools, mavibot, jdbm, and of course studio.

I'll keep you informed about the progress!
