Can hbase running without hdfs in distribute mode?

Hi all,
I have heard that HBase can be deployed as without hdfs in distribute mode, is it true? which version support this feature?  or this just a special commercial constomization?

It can run without hdfs but can not without dfs :)

HBase in distributed mode depends on a (distributed) filesystem for correct
operation.
