FSFS backup

Hi All,

Every time I think I have everything I need to start migration, the path
gets a little bit longer.

Assuming there is no activity in my repository (FSFS), is it safe to
take a backup using the "tar" command of the entire repository.

The mail archives indicate to use a svndump for the repository and tar
for hooks & conf or use hotcopy.

Thanks in advance.

Lakshman

Which one is right?

I considered using svk, but it doesn't currently have zsh completions.

I can't.

Too inefficient (rsync would be better) and unreliable, and it would
no longer be a mirroring system then.

Yes.

If you NFS mount the output filesystem, that will give you remote
backup. If you can't do that, you can tar up the output, ftp or scp
it across, and untar it. That should do the job...

This command is only to do a backup. Mirroring, AFAIK, is not
currently supported directly by subversion. You might want to look at
SVK for mirroring.

BTW, is it only a backup system or a mirroring one?
i.e. can one access to /path/to/backup/repository with svn
reliably?

Also, is there any plan to backup/mirror to a remote machine
with "svnadmin hotcopy" (with identical repositories)? Or do
I need another tool?

You can use the "svnadmin hotcopy" command.
# svnadmin hotcopy /path/to/repository /path/to/backup/repository

This command can be used even when the repository is being used. The
command is smart enough to backup only until the *last completed*
transaction.
