Hadoop future?
Hi,
I think you have already heard rumours about Microsoft could buy Yahoo. Does
anybody have any idea how this could impact specifically Hadoop future?
I know this is all about speculations now...

I belive hadoop will go further whether or not M$ takeover yahoo's
business, although support from big company is very very important.
AFAK, there are some other big companies interested in this project, such
as IBM and Google, even some telecom operators are making plans to
contribute to this project.

First, Hadoop is an Apache project. Y! contributes to it, along with
others. Apache projects are designed to be able to survive the
departure of any single contributor.
Second, while I know no more than you do about the acquisition, my guess
is that, it if goes through, it will not significantly increase the odds
that Y! will cease contributing to Hadoop anytime soon. That's always
possible, and Hadoop would survive it, but I don't think it is likely.
Y! has deeply embraced Hadoop, and separating the two would be
counterproductive. Y! is more valuable to MSFT with Hadoop than without it.
I do not speak for Y!.

Having the strong support from Yahoo is great but it's a top level
Apache project now. The community *should* be able to recover from
that scenario ...but isn't that question asked a little too soon?

Ah, but you need to understand that Google actually want people using Map
Reduce: it helps broaden the base of potential engineers with relevant
skills.
I'd be extremely surprised if they released their internal version. But,
Hadoop is an excellent alternative. You can even see a little of this with
Google supporting some US Universities using Hadoop:

I would say good-will support can only go so far. I think most valuable
support comes from organizations that most depend on Hadoop.

A little bit of speculation is ok I guess. It was good to see what Doug
said above.
I am obviously concerned about my favorite software both as a user and
as a developer. I sure hope to continue to have the luxury of being paid
full-time by Y! to work on Hadoop, access to massive internal Hadoop
clusters, and of course co-Hadoopers around me at work.
Speaking only for myself, not for Yahoo! , of course.

They are going to rewrite the entire thing in .NET and kill the Java
version of course ;)
Let's wait and see if the sale goes thru before we even worry about what

It is essentially impossible for me to conceive of Microsoft pulling
Yahoo out of hadoop.
Microsoft is blind. Yahoo is somewhat less blind, at least as it
relates to the internet. Part of what Microsoft has stated is that
they want the engineers from yahoo. How much sense would it make to
suggest that you want all the engineers, but you want them to abandon
everything they have done and start again on IIS. I dont think so.
I believe Hadoop, at least in this regard, is *totally* safe.
