A patch for branch-1 is very simple, just a few lines of diff. I'm testing it, will attach once I can confirm tests pass. However I don't think branch-1 has the same exposure to the perf problem. I'm not sure how to demonstrate a benefit. I will try some simple benchmarking but may need to resort to JMH to quantify it to any degree of certainty. Fortunately the change is simple, easy to reason about, and so no harm to include regardless (IMHO).
