http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=40620

           Summary: Auth Manager does not add header with HTTPClient sampler
           Product: JMeter
           Version: 2.2
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: HTTP
        AssignedTo: jmeter-dev@jakarta.apache.org
        ReportedBy: rarokni@hotmail.co.uk

Hi,

Ran some tests and the HTTPClient sampler did not seem to be adding the

Authorization: Basic (hash)

to the header. Easy to work around as it can be hardcoded into the header
manager.

I've added some unit tests for port 8080 and they work; furthermore my testing
was against a local Tomcat installation on port 8080, so I don't understand
why it is not working for you.

What did the debug say?

Are you sure it is not some other problem?

work. I will attach a file with with I tried but that did not work.

Should I send you some debug logging?

I did all my testing against local ports 808x so I don't understand why it
should work for you using 80 and 443 but not 8080. There is no code that
checks the port numbers as far as I am aware.

Please can you say exactly what is not working now:
is it just Basic auth?
Is it the same for both the Java and Httpclient samplers?

The Auth header is not shown in the Tree View. This is deliberate.

As far as I know this is now working.

I've also updated the Auth Manager to have separate Domain and Realm fields.

See the recent nightly build:

If there is still a problem, please re-open the bug with further details.

I see what you mean - it looks as though it only handles 80 and 443.

However, what this code is doing is to allow for matching http://a.b.c.d/ and
http://a.b.c.d:80/ equally. Likewise for https and 443. Messy - but it does
work as far as I can tell.

I have added some debug to the Auth Manager and created a new build.

To enable the debug, set the following jmeter property:

log_level.jmeter.protocol.http.control.AuthManager=DEBUG

The reference to Java was to the default HTTP (i.e. Java-provided
implementation) sampler, as opposed to the HTTP HttpClient sampler.

Good question. I did my initial tests with basic authentication quite a while
ago, so the only explanation is a configuration mistake on my side at that time.

------- Additional Comments From bernd.goetz@iaeth.ch  2007-02-13 15:12 -------
Still does not help me much with typical test ports like 8080.

Ok, I sat down and wrote such a compare method. I attached a simple class and a
junit test case class to this bug. Here's a sketch of the method
getAuthforURL(.) in AuthManager, be aware that this is coded away without any
testing as I did not have the time to setup the development environment for
JMeter properly:

public Authorization getAuthForURL(URL url) {
	if (!isSupportedProtocol(url)) {
		return null;
	}
	for (PropertyIterator iter = getAuthObjects().iterator(); iter.hasNext();) {
		Authorization auth = (Authorization) iter.next().getObjectValue();
		URL url2 = new URL(auth.getURL());
		log.debug("Checking match against auth'n entry: " + url2);
		if (URLCompare.isIncluded(url2, url)) {
			log.debug("Matched, request url '" + url +
					"' matches authorization url '" + url2 + "'");
			return auth;
		}
		log.debug("Did not match");
	}
	log.debug("No authorization url matched request url, authorization header not
added");
	return null;
}

The method gets much leaner and more readable in this way.

You can migrate my code into yours in that class. Just add my name in the class
as a co-author or something, if you agree. Of course, the test cases are also
very valuable, they tell what that method is able to do and what not. However
I'm not sure how you would integrate them into the JMeter code base.

Ok, works now.

Yes, the source has been changed since then, but not in that area, so probably
not worth retesting. Sorry to say I have not had time to check your

I tested it and it works now, at least for the regular ports 80 and 443.
However, e.g. for port 8080, it doesn't. In test environment, it is common to
use non-standard port numbers. I hope you don't mind, that I reopen the entry here.

Furthermore, I see that the request header does not appear in the "Request" tab
of View Result Tree Listener. But that might be on purpose, I'm not sure.

I refer to the class org.apache.jmeter.protocol.http.control.AuthManager and the
method

public Authorization getAuthForURL(URL url)

The code in there only works for port 80 and 443. Are we talking about the same
thing here? I refer to the nightly build from "10-Feb-2007 04:17".

I'm only testing it with the HTTP client - what do you mean with 'Java samplers'
in this context? I'm not aware that Basic Authentication is applicable with RMI
or RMI/IIOP.

Did you change the source since 29 November? Should I retest it? It did not work
with the nightly at that time.

Works OK for me in 2.2 and current nightly when tested against Tomcat Manager
(which uses Basic authentication).

Can you test with the current nightly and see if that has the problem?

You can enable DEBUG by selecting the Auth Manager and using Help/Enable Debug.

This might show why the Auth is not working. If you can't work it out, please
attach the log to this issue - replace any sensitive data first!!

(In reply to comment #9)

> test@test.com

Yes, the @ is currently used to separate the name from the realm (for NTLM); it
was a quick hack (which has turned out to be a nuisance...)

Are you saying that basic auth works OK for you in 2.2 provided that the user
name does not have an "@" in it? Or that basic auth works in the nightly?
