Defaults of 'svn diff' not understood

Dear all,

collaborating with others I really like subversion. However, there is
one issue I do not understand; see the log of the following action:

komsys-pc-ruf:PAPER04!62> svn diff paper.tex
komsys-pc-ruf:PAPER04!63> svn stat -v paper.tex
               43 42 ruf paper.tex
komsys-pc-ruf:PAPER04!64> svn update paper.tex
UU paper.tex
Updated to revision 59.
komsys-pc-ruf:PAPER04!65>

The problem:
I am in a working copy. My colleagues have done some commits.
Before I update my local copy. I would like to see the diff'erence.

I assume I can achieve this functionality by running:

    svn diff -r BASE:HEAD paper.tex

But what is the reason that the latter form is not the default
behaviour of 'svn diff'?

Thanks for any enlightenment.

Lukas

Because what you would normally want to know is how you have changed the file since your last
checkout/update. In Subversion this doesn't require communicating with the server as you have a
local pristine copy of your files.

I very rarely want to know what others have done to a file before I update, perhaps I have too much
faith in others to make reasonable changes and Subversion to merge it properly!
