[jira] Created: (ADFFACES-80) Tip attribute disappeared from various input components

Tip attribute disappeared from various input components
-------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: ADFFACES-80
                 URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ADFFACES-80
             Project: MyFaces ADF-Faces
          Issue Type: Bug
            Reporter: Simon Lessard
            Priority: Minor

Tip attribute was there in the original ADF Faces codebase, I think it was either forgotten or left out when the new renderer was created.

I know some customers using that attribute, so it will be irritating to them if they ever move to Trinidad.

Was the removal intentional or should it be re-added?

Joseph Rozier commented on ADFFACES-80:
---------------------------------------

The tip attribute was replaced by the "help" facet which allows for more control over what the tip/help looks like.

It may make sense to restore the tip attribute as a convenience.

However, I'd suggest using the same model as the af:column, which has a "header" facet, but a "headerText" attribute as a convenience. To be consistent, should the convenience attribute for the "help" facet be "helpText" instead of "tip"?

---------------------------------------

Both were used in the last project I was on. We used shortDesc for almost all components to give decently long description of the field (this caused problems in Firefox so we also added a JavaScript alert), while tip was used for some fields only where we wanted to specify the input format. For example:

Postal code: tip="Example: G1H3N6", shortDesc="Once you fill the postal code, the municipality and street list of values will be automatically populated"

what about using shortDesc instead of tip? Are people using shortDesc and tip on a single component for two different purposes? Can anyone provide an example?

Changed from bug to improvement since removing the attribute was done on purpose.

---------------------------------------

Providing helpText attribute for convenience sounds good enough to me, it will be easier to convert from ADF Faces to Trinidad with it than adding a facet.
