RE: [commons] archives assistance [Configuration]
Let me give you a concrete example: I can't imagine that someone hasn't already extended [Configuration] so that it reads properties from a database table (we have options for almost everything else in the package). So, I try to search the archives for [Configuration] or DatabaseConfiguration. It's fruitless because there are way too many results.

Doesn't anyone else see this as a huge problem? The knowledge base inherent in this mailing list is enormous. Without decent search capabilities, it's like being in the Library of Congress without a card catalog...hopelessly lost.

It helps to build a community rather than lots of tiny sub-projects.
> 2. (More importantly) I can't find a means to search the archives by project. For example, searching on "[Configuration]" in mail subjects at http://marc.theaimsgroup.com results in (a) the brackets being removed from the search criteria and (b) all mailing lists (not just jakarta-commons) being searched -- there is no "search by subject within mailing list x" option.
Yep. I hoped the apache mailing list archive would be able to handle it,
but it hangs when you enter [lang] into it.
No idea on how to properly search this. Even google goes and ignores
puncutation I believe.

More specifically:
http://nagoya.apache.org/eyebrowse/SearchList?listName=commons-dev@jakarta.apache.org
Search body for +configuration +database -"bug database"
Works for me.

I have a need to search the archives pretty often, but I don't seem to
have the trouble that you have. True, the word "configuration" is
probably very common, but usually a lot of messages that my searches
return belong to the same thread, and it's not too hard to sift through
and find what I need.
Even if hundreds of messages are returned, it usually only takes a few
minutes to find what I need. Maybe I'm just lucky ...
Either way, what you're suggesting would be a good idea.
Maybe try at the archives at: http://nagoya.apache.org/eyebrowse/
