[I] problems with route debugging in hawtio [camel-karaf]

tim08 opened a new issue, #653:
URL: https://github.com/apache/camel-karaf/issues/653

   I have the following stack:

   - karaf 4.4.8
   - java 21

   features:

   - camel 4.10.7
   - hawtio 2.17.7
   - camel-debug(Without this feature, there is no debug tab in hawtio.)
   - camel-jetty(for testing)

   blueprint:
   ```
   <blueprint xmlns="http://www.osgi.org/xmlns/blueprint/v1.0.0">
       <camelContext xmlns="http://camel.apache.org/schema/blueprint">
           <route>
   	    <from uri="jetty:http://0.0.0.0:8085/test"/>
               <to uri="log:test" />
           </route>
       </camelContext>
   </blueprint>
   ```

   I get the following exception in the browser console after clicking on the debug tab in hawtio:

   ```
   app-fafe513f4b.js:1 [hawtio-core] Operation getBreakpoints failed due to: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException : No operation getBreakpoints found on MBean org.apache.camel:context=test.xml-camel-1,name=BacklogDebugger,type=tracer
   ```
   after clicking on the "add breakpoint" button, I see a notification in the browser console:
   `[hawtio-integration-camel-debugger] Add breakpoint`

   and karaf:
   ```
   09:27:13.322 INFO [qtp1130788301-559] Enabling Camel debugger
   09:29:30.284 INFO [qtp1130788301-565] Adding breakpoint to1
   ```
   at the same time, visually in hawtio we do not see the fact of the installation of breakpoint. (There was a red dot on the camel 2 + karaf 4.2.16 + hawtio 2.17 build.)

   After I make a request to http://localhost:8085/test the route stops itself, but I don't see it in hawtio, the following logs are in the browser console:
   ```
   [hawtio-integration-camel-debugger] Getting suspended breakpoints!
   app-fafe513f4b.js:1 [hawtio-core] Operation getSuspendedBreakpointNodeIds failed due to: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException : No operation getSuspendedBreakpointNodeIds found on MBean org.apache.camel:context=test.xml-camel-1,name=BacklogDebugger,type=tracer
   ```

   <img width="2541" height="1351" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8b91f37e-8ab1-4fe3-afdb-31e67e93e0e5" />

   and this is how it looked before:

   <img width="2324" height="1299" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/45ae7d80-662d-4af4-adbe-cdf12912ef6b" />

   In addition, the trace tab is missing (I tried to install the camel-tracing feature, but nothing happened)

   You can have Hawtio 4 running _outside_. See https://hawt.io/docs/get-started.html for information about how to run it on Spring Boot, Quarkus, WAR (JakartaEE 9+). And then use "Connect" feature to connect to external Jolokia Agent running in the same JVM as the Camel application.

   The point is that this target JVM also needs Jolokia Agent running as WAR and Jolokia 1.x (the one that supports `javax.servlet` API) is no longer maintained in favor of Jolokia 2.x (`jakarta.servlet`).

   You can try installing _old_ Jolokia in Karaf 4.4.x:
   * https://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/jolokia/jolokia-war/1.7.2/ or
   * https://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/jolokia/jolokia-osgi-bundle/1.7.2/

   And then connect from externally running Hawtio 4, but I can't promise everything will be smooth, as Hawtio 4 _may_ rely on some optimization introduced in Jolokia 2.

   I close this issue for now as it's not directly related to camel-karaf.

   @grgrzybek Thank you very much for your reply. Could you recommend an alternative thread? Maybe I can install the latest version hawtio alongside it and somehow connect to routes that work on karaf?

   Hawtio 4 has support for Camel 4, but then you won't be able to install it easily in Karaf 4.4.x.

   There's apache/karaf#2067 issue - when it's fixed, Karaf 4.5.x will have support for `jakarta.servlet` deployments with Pax Web 11. When it's ready we can think about adding "Hawtio 4 Karaf features".

   You're mixing old Hawtio 2 with new Camel 4 and also you're running in Karaf.
   Camel 4 is using JakartaEE APIs (among others), while Karaf 4.x is still based on old `javax.*` packages.

   There's an unresolved hawtio/hawtio#3869 issue to "bring back Hawtio to OSGi/Karaf", but due to low demand (OSGi is not a modern technology..., though it's still being maintained) it's not a top priority...

   At some point we may get back to OSGi, but nothing certain yet about particular time...

   It's also possible to use the same approach as camel-cxf, e.g. repackaging with jakarta.servlet.
