[VOTE] Accept Cas Viewer Eclipse Plugin for inclusion in the Sandbox
Tong Fin has attached the code and documentation for a Cas Viewer
Eclipse Plugin to a Jira issue
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/uima-1102
The documentation includes a table that compares the functionality of
this with other tooling (see the 4th attachment on the Jira issue).
A software grant for this code has been received and recorded.
Please vote as follows:
[ ] +1 In favor of accepting the submission into the Sandbox.
[ ] +0 Abstain / No Opinion
[ ] -0 Have some concerns (please state) but won't block acceptance
into the Sandbox
[ ] -1 Have serious issue (please state) that needs resolution before
proceeding.

I cannot remember all the details of the requirements.
Most of the requirements and feedbacks that I got so far were implemented
in the CAS Viewer 1-2 years ago. The best way to understand more is to
play around with the CAS Viewer and look at the user guide and
functionality comparison documentation.
The following are some examples of requirements:
- ability to inspect the CAS by navigating the type system or
the index repository (e.g., show the annotations of specific types, show
the feature structures in specific index, etc.)
- easy to inspect a large type system (a few hundred types)
- color coding support as other UIMA tools (Annotation Viewer and CVD)
and the ability to reuse existing style map file
- multi-sofa support
- provide APIs to reuse CAS Viewer by other tools (currently used by
some internal UIMA tools and an IBM product)
...
Most of the requests are related to UI. For example, some users require
a quick way to see the feature structures without details (the CAS Viewer
provides a "flat" or "tree" structure to support this). The challenge is
to provide a customizable way to show the contents with a few mouse clicks
for different users.

CAS Viewer and CAS Editor may have different goals and target users.
What I can think right now is, for example, the color coding and some easy way
to support big type system may help. Multi-sofa may have low priority.
One way is to get feedbacks from UIMA users about what are good or missing
with respect to the current functionality. Then, we can work together
to find out
what can be re-used.

Yeah that would be great. Please explain the internal requirements so
that I (as non IBM guy) can understand the motivation behind the
features.
Then I would like to understand why it does not make sense to put
these features into the Editor (if not clear).

Please make a list of the components/parts you want to reuse. I will

There are many examples of different editors for the same content. In UIMA,
the annotation viewer and the Cas visual debugger have different features
for viewing a Cas. That's not an answer in this particular case, just a
general comment that there are often good reasons for having more than one.
The Cas Editor shows nearly the same information as the Cas Viewer

There are many features in the Viewer based on the above mentioned tools
plus requirements from internal users. There was an intention to put it on
Apache well over a year ago, see
http://cwiki.apache.org/UIMA/uima-integrated-toolset.html, but that did not
happen for various reasons, mainly lack of bandwidth.
We can make a list of Viewer features not in the Editor.

It could turn out that a good read-write interface is different enough from
a good read-only interface to keep them separate. On the other hand, there
should be common components that could be used for both. More discussion
needed.

Sure this is possible, why should we do this ?
The Cas Editor shows nearly the same information as the Cas Viewer
does. I think it would be confusing to have two different editors to
show
a CAS file. If there is something important missing in the Cas Editor,
it
can be added, just point it out.
It is not a big deal to create a plugin which contains the viewing an
editing part
of the Cas Editor. This plugin will then expose an API to open a CAS
object in
the editor. We can then use this in the Cas Editor RCP and together with
a uima development plugin inside an eclipse instance.
Please explain what is the benefit from having the Cas Viewer instead of
changing the Cas Editor.

Great to know that you can build.
The Cas Viewer assumes that there is a type system file with name ending
with"typesystem.xml" in the same folder as the xmi file. Because of that, by
putting a small code to look at the type system folder in your Cas Editor
RCP, it is possible to put the Cas Viewer in your RCP.
I did have this small piece of code. Do you like me to submit that ?

Thanks I got it working from the zip, as Marshal told me.
I already took a first look at it. Looks quite the same as the
Cas Editor expect that you did not used any views.
But I have to spent some more time exploring it.

Hi Jörn,
It is great idea that you can review the CAS Viewer and give the
comments/feedbacks.
I will use the zip file in Jira, will build with a clean Eclipse, and will
post back the steps on how to build. Also, I will post some patch to make it
work in your CAS Editor RCP.

The code in the sandbox may have some troubles, since I was starting to
"mavenize" it but have stopped work pending our discussions and votes.
You may have better luck using the zip files from the original patch

Actually I think Thilo is right. But now is the code already in the
sandbox and that the
Cas Viewer plugins are there is an accomplished fact. I do not like
the way this happend
either.
In my opinion we should leave it there and discuss now the issues
which arise
from this fact.
Maybe we should merge the the code and have one plugin for editing and
viewing a CAS.
I do not know. Eddie told us that its nicely complement the Cas
Editor. That sounds like
it would make sense to merge it and I am always happy if the Cas
Editor gets better.
I will review the Cas Viewer and then tell here what I think we can do.

Re: [VOTE] [CANCEL] Accept Cas Viewer Eclipse Plugin for inclusion in the Sandbox
Posted by Eddie Epstein <ea...@gmail.com>.
The following is a summary of the off-list discussions and actions on the
CAS Viewer that occurred prior to this thread.
Tong Fin developed the CAS viewer as an eclipse plugin in 2006 against the
aphaWorks version of UIMA. It was to be part of a suite of plugins (see
http://cwiki.apache.org/UIMA/uima-integrated-toolset.html) intended to
integrate UIMA SDK tools into eclipse. Although work on the suite stopped in
early 2007, the CAS viewer was found to be useful by several internal
projects.
This year Tong started working on how to enhance debug support for UIMA
components (see
http://cwiki.apache.org/UIMA/improving-uima-debug-capabilities.html). Given
the rich set of features in the CAS viewer and his familiarity with the
code, he wanted to utilize this code.
On May 6 a binary version of Tong's CAS viewer was forwarded to the subset
of committers that work for the same company, for feedback to see if we
should work to get internal corporate approval to donate this to Apache.
A concern was raised how the CAS viewer relates to the CAS Editor project
that is already part of Apache UIMA. Based on this, Tong did a small
modification to integrate into the CAS Editor. Several people thought that
the Viewer could be interesting to the Apache UIMA project, a useful
addition to the CasEditor, and certainly worth a discussion on uima-dev.
Following this, we then went through the [long] process of getting our
corporate legal approval to donate the code to Apache; part of this involved
getting a Software Grant signed and sent to Apache. When this was done, a
Jira issue was created and the code attached.
However, one of the committers got confused (due to 2 other software grant /
donations also being submitted recently). Incorrectly thinking that the
discussion had already occurred, he inadvertently checked the code into
SVN. At this point it was pointed out on the dev list that we hadn't had a
[Vote] on this, so a [Vote] was called for. But what was really the case
was that we hadn't even had the public discussion on this. When this was
pointed out, the [Vote] was canceled, and work was stopped on bringing this
into SVN.

Good points. I think some of us messed up the process here, so, let's
cancel this vote, and start over...
Part of starting over will be to acknowledge and document some off-list
discussions about this and why they started off-list, and summarize

We had no discussions on this. We have no plans how to merge
the CAS editor and the CAS viewer. There is quite a lot of
code there, and it is hardly documented. What are Tong's
plans with this when it becomes part of Apache UIMA? Will he
continue developing it? Will he work with Joern on the CAS
Editor?
Why didn't all of the committers know a software grant
was in the works? We'll never graduate out of the incubator
if we don't learn to do things the Apache way. Having mentors
that are awol most of the time doesn't help either, but we

The only reason I'm not voting -1 is because Joern didn't.

Jörn,
Before proposing this submission we tested how easily the CAS Viewer would
integrate with the CAS Editor, and what the combination would be like. The
result was that integration was easy and the new functions nicely compliment
the CAS Editor IDE.
With the CAS Viewer integrated there is an additional way to open an XCas or
XmiCas file, providing additional functionality not currently in the CAS
Editor. The CAS viewer is read-only to the CAS.

That's a good idea to have consistent UI across multiple tools.
Also, as someone mentioned before in the mailing list, if we can run CAS
Editor as a plug-in instead of RCP, it will help.

This is a good idea to investigate; I think it probably will occur over
time. There are some differences for now, especially in packaging - the
CAS Editor is an RCP tool, while the CAS Viewer is an Eclipse Plugin.
