Steps given above works ok in recent nightly build
Apache OpenOffice 3.5.0 350m1(Build:9611)
installed from:
Apache_OpenOffice_3.5.0_Linux_x86_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz_2013-02-05_04:29:57_1442466.tar.gz
Modifed file (connector added) saved and reopened correctly.
Modified file saved and opened in AOO 3.4.1 still crashed.
Note: svg objects are the connector targets in this file.

ALG: Checked again on a pretty current r1465509, works well, file loads,
connector is not missing after reload.

I too cannot open the document produced with that template in AOO3.4.1, but it
does not crash. The same file opens fine in AOO350m1(Build:9611) - Rev.
1432130.

ALG: Tried in a work build, connected the first two shapes, (EC2 and instance),
saved, reload -> connector is there. Same when ending AOO in-between. Do you do
something special here, which type of connector, which objects do you connect?
