DBIx - setting a date time stamp

I need to set a date time stamp using DBIx.  I tried to pass the oracle
function sysdate, but that did not work because DBIx says that the
logged_datetime field is of a differenent type.  I then used javascript to
create me a date time stamp, but it is in two peices mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss and
this seems to miss up things also.  So,
has anyone done this before and if so, what must I do to address this issue.
