Hi everyone,
Starting today we are accepting applications from organizations who have
participated in a previous Google Summer of Code (you!) to get involved with
our contest for 13-17 year olds, Google Code-in [0] (GCI).
If you haven’t read up about GCI, you can check out our announcement [1] to
this list from Friday or read our blog post [2] about the contest.
If your org has decided it would like to apply to participate in the
contest, you can fill out the application [3] on Melange now. The deadline
for applications is 1 November at 23:00 UTC.
Please read over the rules for participating as an organization in GCI
before applying, they can be found on the organization application [3]
itself. Please remember to also read over our Information Page [4] for GCI
org admins and mentors to make sure your org has the time and capacity to
participate this year. We have made a couple changes to the workflow and the
task management this year; please make sure you're familiar with them.
We value your org’s past service to Google Summer of Code, and hope your org
will consider participating in Google Code-in.

Ross, did this go to the PMC's? I don't recall seeing in on DB private,
but had a major mail malfunction for a day, so may have missed it.
Thanks

Are there lists of sample (preferably successful) tasks from past years
somewhere? I think that would help a lot to improve understanding of
what is required.
Thanks

I think that would be best if there is an option with Google for
individual PMC's to apply directly on this one. I think it just all
starts and stops too fast for a foundation wide effort this year.
Better to have individual PMC's with some success and grow into it
organically for the foundation.

Ross, can you confirm that you let PMCs know about this?
There's a day left to apply, and I haven't seen it on the HTTPD list
(may be my filtering error?)
Thanks,
Noirin

All this is good, but meaningless unless someone has the time to
follow through. I'm going to leave it one more day. If there is no ASF level
follow through I will notify PMCs that they should apply directly.

Hi
Some of suggestions are as follows:

> hours would we expect a task to take?
As far as I know the tasks are categorized as per the level of difficulty
(easy, medium and hard). Certain points are associated with each level of
difficulty.
Each task also has a pre-fixed amount of time to complete the task which is
decided by the mentor for the task.
Student do not necessarily work on the tasks only for one organization. They
are free to switch between the organizations as soon as they complete the
task.

Not very sure of the intricacies of Jira infrastructure or policies from our
side, but gci-2011 for the tasks would be good to manage the tasks on
Apache's side.
On google's side, melange provides an interface to manage the completed
tasks on there end as well. discussion between students and mentor usually
happens there but as we already have a established infrastructure like Jira
so encouraging the prospective students to use it would be a good bet. :)
If I remember correctly, google requires the students to upload the
patch/documentation or anything produced for the task on melange as well
with each completed task.

Yes, this year google requires the organization to have a good number of
tasks before applying (I am not sure but probably on a wiki page)
It would be good to have a list of probably roles and responsibility that an
admin needs to perform.

One part of the application is a link to our tasks page. One thing that
has confused me about this program is how tasks should be sized. How
many hours would we expect a task to take? Do we have an old list from
when we participated in GCI to get an idea?
Also what kind of infrastructure do we want for our task list, just Jira
labels or something else?
It seems before we submit our application we should get the list of
tasks started and have a primary admin volunteer. I wish I could
admin but am too time constrained right now. I could work on adding
some tasks for Derby once I understand the sizing.
Thanks
